创作背景
相传这首诗作于1872年，这时候的狄金森已经42岁，过了自己的创作黄金期。但恰恰因为喷涌的诗情慢慢平缓，诗人的笔触也更加冷静并充满思考。42年人间岁月，喜悲寒暑，就是这一番。
诗歌赏析
该诗秉承了狄金森一贯简洁的诗风，四行两句，意蕴无穷。当你拥有过幸福的体验，任何一点苦难都会变得格外 明显并且强烈。人为什么会麻木，因为从出生到死亡都生活在一种单一的情绪中，所以安于这种生活而没有任何跌宕的感受，就像《美丽新世界》被安排好的人生，但一旦某个人的感情被触动，他体会到一种别样的、前所未有的东西，就再也没办法忍受那固有的“黑暗”了。

This poem is really short but so meaningful. "Had I not seen the Sun, I could have borne the shade". That reminds me of a sentence I have read before:" Because I have been deeply loved by him, I cannot accept others easily now." In other words, if we have experienced different kinds of situations, contrast would appeare in our minds. At that time, we could tell which one is better, which force us to persue the better life. Unluckily, if we failed, our heart will be full of disapportment. That is why the author says,"But Light a newer Wilderness, My Wilderness has made."

This poem inherits Dickinson's concise poetic style and contains four lines and two sentences. As far as I am concerned, when you have a happy experience, a bit of suffering becomes obvious and serious. That's why people numb, because of the whole life in a single mood. Thus, contenting with the life without the feeling of the ups and downs, like "beautiful new world" was to arrange good life, but once someone's feelings have been moved, he realized something unique and unprecedented, just can't stand the inherent "darkness".

The poem is very short but profound. The poet uses the symbolism to compare the positive optimism and negative pessimism in the secular society with the "sun" and "darkness". The two forms a distinct contrast. "Desolation" implies the loneliness of the poet's heart. Maybe this poem is a love poem.The Sun symbolizes the one Who poet loved. The poet is lonely, but the loneliness is amplified when she meets the one she loved. Different people have different opinions about this short poem. One Chinese poem calls to my mind, when I read this poem,曾经沧海难为水，除却巫山不是云！
