本章是新一轮的审讯，按照O’Brien 的话说是改造的第二阶段（understanding）。他向Winston灌输了党是不可推翻的，党是永恒的，这是思想的出发点 there is no way in which the Party can be overthrown .The rule of the Party is forever .Make that the starting-point of your thoughts. 个人完全服从于党，方得永生，权利超越物质，we control matter because we control the mind .Reality is inside the skull…Nothing exists except through human consciousness 世界只存在于人的意识中，万物皆为我而生！典型的唯心主义啊。

O‘Brien似乎可以洞察W的一切心理活动，知道他在想什么，有时候甚至W还没有开口，O就已经了然于心，the real power ,the power we have to fight night and day ,is not power over things …..power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing.

O’Brien口中的社会建立在仇恨之上，we have cut the links between child and parent ,and between man and man , and between man and woman . No one dares trust a wife or a child or a friend any longer. 社会纽带被割断，人人都是敌人，唯有对党的忠诚there will be no loyalty ,except loyalty towards the Party. There will be no love, except the love of Big Brother.

本章中This drama that I have played out with you during seven years will be played out over and over again generation after generation .原来这至始至终就是一场预谋，就是被O玩弄于掌股的一出戏。

Winston内心一直是抗拒接受O的观点，他在一次次反驳，内心坚持(I consider myself superior ) ,但是在看到自己备受摧残，已经没有人形的身体时，内心是崩溃的，自己成了一个臭皮囊（a bag of filth）,尊严全无a feeling of pity for his ruined body overcame him.
