I am the academic advisor of my formerstudent Lizhao Wang. We have known each other for more than twelve years. It iswith great pleasure that I write this letter of support for Lizhao Wang for thescientific Analyst position in your department.
Lizhao showed his positive attitude
of learning when he was an undergraduate student. During the four years he
studied as a undergraduate student, he actively engaged in the projects of my
group and contributed to the work such as the translation of books or materials
and design of interfaces in an atmospheric correction system for China–Brazil
Earth Resources Satellite (CBERS). At the spring of 2008, I became the advisor
for his bachelor thesis and was satisfied with his performance inscientific
research practice.
He became a qualified research assistant
with full of responsibility and passion after he graduated. I introduced him to
join in the program group ofGlobal LAnd Surface Satellite (GLASS) Remote
Sensing Data Processing System and Products. Since I worked for the same
program, I knew that he played a key role in his team. He offered data support
and developed useful tools for his team members which helped them promote their
work efficiently. His workhad gained acclaim from all the
membersof the GLASS program.
He demonstrated great potentialin research, and gained expertise in quantitative remote sensing during his graduate.I became his supervisor in 2011 when he was enrolled in the graduate school ofBeijing Normal University as a master-degree candidate. During the period ofworking toward his master degree, I oversaw his strengthening of researchskills. He made brilliant works in many projects as group leader orparticipant. In regarding to the problem of pre-processing Hyperion data, hedeveloped a tool kit to realize the whole process from digital number tosurface spectrum independently. The tool kit was applied in several other projectsand performed efficient and stable. Sometimes, he was under a strong pressurefrom his work because he had to deal with difficult works from severalprojects. However, he was able to develop core steps quickly and finish all thetasks well in time.
In all, Lizhao is active,intelligent, energetic, warm-hearted, and hard-working, with nice researchpotential and problem solving skills. Lizhao
performed positive, professional and team-oriented during our cooperation. He joined
my group to be a research assistant in 2009. He took account for the producing
and validating of the albedo products ofGlobal LAndSurface Satellite (GLASS) program. During his work, he made progress rapidlyand worked positively. He collected and organized validation data such asground measurements and satellite observations earnestly and thoroughly. Besides,he supported works of other group members responsibly and timely and thereforegot the highly identification from all the group members. Moreover, he showedtalents on programming work, and developed several effective tools to deal withthe problems such as data subset, calibration, re-projection and mosaic. Thesetools were applied in works on most teams in GLASS program and gained approvalwidely. In addition, he is very warm-hearted. He liked to share all hisexperiences and was rarely refused the assistance requirement from other groupmembers.
He
developed his problem-solving ability rapidly after he began to pursue the
master degree in Beijing Normal University. He continued his work on GLASS
albedo products validation while he performed well on several other programs at
the same time. He could arrange his time well and enjoy each work. Hesummarizedhis
albedo products validation work clearly and gave a quite professional academic lecture,
which affirmed by the anonymous reviewers. This lecture was rewarded as “annual
excellent paper” by Journal of Remote Sensing in 2015. In addition, he solved
most of problems he met in the projects he took account for independently.Even when he faced
those really difficult, he discussed them with me and other team members actively
and was willing to accept and absorb each suggestion after thinking it.

Iam very interested in this opportunity. The semi-research and semi-operationalworking environment attracts me very much because my potential is mainly onresearch and programming. My former job has a similar work content combiningthe remote sensing algorithm and software development. Besides, the research onair-quality spurs my interest a lot since Beijing, my hometown, suffers a very severeair pollution problem each winter. It is extremely important for people livedthere to receive a early warning and prepare for it.

Besides,
I believe my research experiences on remote sensing and my programming skill
will contribute to realize the objectives of this task. I have studied for
seven years on remote sensing to pursue my bachelor and master degree and had
three years work experience on this field. I accumulate abundant knowledge and
skills during the long period experience. For example, when I worked as a
research assistant inGlobal LAnd Surface Satellite (GLASS)program and then engaged in graduate school, I became very familiar to theMODIS product system because I spent more than three years to validate andcompare MODIS reflectance and albedo data. Aerosol depth data from MODIS andground measurements were adopted to correct the atmosphere effect onreflectance. Besides, I got knowledge about a number of mainly satellite data,such as SPOT, AVHRR, Worldview2 and Hyperion in my on-campus practices.
Inaddition, I am very adept in C++ codes, especially in aspects referring remotesensing. I programmed for the I/O, re-projection, subset and re-sampling ofAVHRR, SPOT, MODIS and VIIRS data. I worked as a R&D engineer in BeijingPiesat corporation and accomplished four projects in which I developed both thealgorithm and interface codes with C++. I also have experiences on codestransplant and translation. In the GLASS program, one of my work was totransplant the C++ codes developed in Windows and debug them in Linux system. Itranslated IDL and matlab codes to C++ with the assistance of OpenCV libs inother projects. Besides, I have a limited python and shell knowledge gained byself study.
Moreover,I am readily to work and support others. For example, I exerted all my effortsto support the work of my group members and accomplished my tasks of goodquality as a research assistant. Therefore, I was cited as co-author in theirpapers more than ten times. During my study in graduate school, I took up thepost of teaching assistant of the course “Database System Concepts” thrice. Ihelped my teacher to prepare course material and manage students. In my work, Ialways feel happy to share my experiences with my cooperators.
MyEnglish skill has been qualified by the GRE (score: 320) and TOEFL (score: 90)tests. Although my oral English is not well present, I am practicing it andtalking with others as possible as I can. I believe it would be not an obstacleof the work in the near future.
