Among them is ringing in the ears. This condition is treatable but difficult to cure. Meanwhile the patient must endure a constant bell-like sound in the ears.

The other hazards are harder to pin down. For many of us, there may be a risk that exposure to the stress of noise increases our susceptibility to disease and infection. The more vulnerable among us may experience noise as a complicating factor in heart problems and other diseases. Noise that merely annoys and irritates healthy persons may have far more serious consequences for these already ill in mind or body.

Noise affects us throughout our lives. For example, there are indications of effects on the unborn child when mothers are exposed to industrial and environmental noise. During infancy and childhood, youngsters exposed to high noise levels may have trouble falling asleep and obtaining the necessary rest.

The capital during the Tang Dynasty was at Chang’an, now known as Xi’an (now Xi’an), which had the largest population among cities in the world at the time. This dynasty was a high point of Chinese civilization (reached one of the greatest heights of Chinese civilization). The early emperor(s) (of the dynasty) fought one battle after another to expand their territory, which in the end was comparable in size to that of the Han Dynasty. Two censuses were conducted in the 7th and 8th centuries. According to the number of registered families of the dynasty, the population reached (a total of) about 50 million people. By the 9th century the national government was on the point of collapse and could hardly conduct/ carried out a precise demographic survey (obtain accurate census data), but the roughly estimated population had increased to approximately 80 million.
