VMware’s blockchain platform to integrate Digital Asset’s smart-contract language
Publicly listed software firm VMware is adopting Digital Asset’s smart-contract language (DAML) for its blockchain platform, according to a press release. DAML, which was open-sourced only last week, is designed for multi-party business processes, but has not been run on an external distributed ledger platform until now. VMware is now planning to distribute DAML-coded smart contracts to its global customer base via its blockchain. “DAML has been proven to be one of the few smart-contract languages capable of modeling truly complex workflows at scale,” said Michael DiPetrillo, Senior Director of Blockchain at VMware. “VMware is delighted to be working together on customer deployments to layer VMware Blockchain alongside DAML. Customers demand choice of language execution environments from their blockchain and DAML adds a truly robust and enterprise-focused language set to a blockchain platform with multi-language support.” Digital Asset has also recently announced its partnership with ISDA, aiming to boost adoption of ISDA’s derivatives-management tool.

Albertsons joins the IBM Food Trust network
More than 80 brands have already joined the IBM Food Trust network, and Albertsons—the owner of Randall’s, Safeway, and Tom Thumb supermarkets—is the latest addition, according to an IBM press release. The network uses a blockchain to trace food items back to their source in a matter of seconds. Others have followed suit, including Walmart, which requires all of its greens suppliers to participate in the blockchain network following massive recalls of romaine lettuce. European retailer Carrefour has also introduced a blockchain to ascertain the origin of the products it sells. Earlier this year, IBM announced it had put a shipment of oranges on the blockchain as a trial, reducing "the administrative process of transferring the title deed, from five to seven days to just a second.”

Job marketplace site plans to move 700,000 profiles onto EOS blockchain
Following a $5 million investment round led by FinLab EOS VC fund, freelance job-search website Moonlighting is planning to move its infrastructure onto the EOS blockchain, CoinDesk writes. The company has 700,000 users and is planning to grow its base further with the new funding. According to Moonlighting CEO Jeff Tennery, putting user profiles on the EOS blockchain will enable them to import it on any platform; quickly and "with low transaction costs." It will also give them the power to manage how their profiles are used. In addition, the firm will experiment using the technology to authenticate users' training certificates. However, not all data will be put on the blockchain in plain-text, securing some data with hashes dependent on Moonlighting’s centralised database. The lead investor, FinLab EOS VC fund, is a joint venture between FinLab AG and Block.one. Block.one developed EOSIO software on which the EOS blockchain runs. Both aim to foster the adoption of the EOS blockchain by investing in startups willing to migrate onto it.

Bakkt hires former PayPal and Google exec as Chief Product Officer
Bakkt, a cryptocurrency platform run by Intercontinental Exchange, has added another member to its executive team. The firm announced Thursday that Mike Blandina has joined as its Chief Product Officer to lead Bakkt's "efforts to converge a trusted ecosystem for digital assets with payments use cases, two elements of Bakkt that help bring real world applications to bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies." Blandina was previously CTO of OneMarket, a retail technology startup. He also held senior engineering roles at PayPal and Google. As part of the announcement, Bakkt CEO Kelly Loeffler acknowledged the stream of delays the firm has faced since its launch. However, Loeffler states that "as we work through regulatory approvals, we are mindful that the infrastructure we are building has the potential to create more opportunities for digital assets to grow in relevance and trust — by being more secure, investible and useful," and that "as a former marathoner, this point in time recalls the stage in the training regimen when you’re putting in long runs with your training team."
