3In the UK, in business situations, when you meet someone for the first time you shake hands and say, "How do you do?". This is not really a question, and the reply to it is another greeting such as "How do you do?" or "Hello" or "I'm very pleased to meet you" or, if you have met the person sometime before, "It's good to see you again".

You don't shake hands every time you meet someone, you just greet them. If you are invited to someone's house for dinner, it is usual to take a present - some chocolates or flowers or, if you know them quite well, a bottle of wine. If you do not know the host well, don't be the last person to leave. Telephone the next day to thank the host for the meal. English people don't like to talk about personal things, and tend to avoid religion, politics and money.

Good topics for small talk (闲谈) are the weather, holidays, weekend activities, gardens and architecture (建筑物), especially houses and homes. When you go to a pub or bar, it's usual to take turns to buy a drink for everyone in your group and pay for the drinks when you get them from the bar and before you drink them.

4Many people go to school to receive an education. They learn languages, history, physics, chemistry, and math. Others go to school to learn a skill so that they can make a living. School education is very important and useful. Yet, no one can learn everything from school. A teacher, no matter how much he knows, cannot teach his students everything they want to know. The teacher's job is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So, much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves.

It is more important to know how to study by oneself than to know only some facts or formulas (公式). It is in fact quite easy to learn a certain fact in history or a formula in math. But it is very difficult to use a formula in working out a math problem. Great scientists before us didn't get everything from school. Their teachers only showed them the way. But they were all so successful and invented so many things for us. The reason for their success is that they knew how to study. They read books that were not taught at school and they asked many questions. They worked hard all their lives, never wasting time. Above all, they knew how to use their brain.

6Cool is a word with many meanings. Its old meaning is used to express a temperature that is a little bit cold. As the world has changed, the word has had many different meaning.

Coolcan be used to express feelings of interest in almost anything.  When you see a famous car in the street, maybe you will say, It's cool. You may think, He's so cool, when you see your favourite footballer.

We all maximize (扩大) the meaning of cool. You can use it instead of many words such as new or surprising. Here's an interesting story we can use to show the way the word is used. A teacher asked her students to write about the waterfall they had visited. On one student's paper was just the one sentence, It's so cool. Maybe he thought it was the best way to show what he saw and felt.

But the story also shows a scarcity (缺乏) of words. Without cool, some people have no words to show the same meaning. Can you think of many other words that make your life as colourful as the word cool? I can. And I think they are also very cool.

7Oil is so important that it is sometimes called black gold. Almost half of our energy comes from oil. We use it to run our cars and factories and to heat our homes, offices and schools. Many everyday things are made from oil. Your shirt may have oil in the material. The soap you wash your hands with might also be made from oil. Your favorite plastic toy is made from oil.

Oil is hard to find, because it is trapped deep under the earth. Once the only way people knew there was oil someplace if it leaked out of the ground. Today, however, we have many ways of finding oil. One tool measures the pull of gravity. Places where gravity is weaker are more likely to have oil. Another tool is sound waves. Sound waves travel through different kinds of rocks at different speeds. We can use them to find the rocks that have oil in them.

We need a lot of oil, and we are using up the oil wells we know about. Soon we must find new ways of looking for this black gold.

8There are three kinds of goals: short-term, medium-range and long-term goals.

Short-term goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, long-term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed.

The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase.

Long-term goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static thing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action.

9Americans, like many people elsewhere in the world, like to invite friends to their homes for an evening of food, drink and conversation. Formal dinners in fine homes and hotels in the United States are much the same as formal dinners anywhere in the world. But as most people in the United States have no servants, their dinner parties at home are decidedly informal. As many new small homes have no separate dining room or just have very small dining space, guests can also serve themselves and eat in the living room, holding their plates or trays on their knees.

A more enjoyable form of entertainment is the picnic. Americans are great picnickers, and almost every family has a picnic basket. Summer invitations are often for a picnic at a park or in the open countryside. Unless hamburgers or hot dogs are cooked over a fire, picnic food is usually cold - sandwiches, salads, potato chips, pickles. Watermelon is a favorite dessert, followed very often by baseball for the young and active, and naps for the old and weary.

10Pearl Carlson was shaken awake at 3:30 a.m. by a forceful pull. King, the family dog, was trying to pull her out of the bed. Then she smelled smoke and heard the sound of fire from her parent's room. Pearl's screams awaked her mother, Fern, and father, Howard, who had recently been in hospital for lung disease. Helping Howard to a first-floor window, Fern told him to climb out, then ran to her daughter.

Still inside, King appeared at Pearl's window, making squeaking (短促尖叫) sounds. When running toward Pearl's bedroom, Fern realized her husband hadn't yet escaped. She made her way back through the smoke and flames, following King's sound to where Howard lay semiconscious (半昏迷) on the floor. Fern helped him get outside. King came out only after both were safe.

13Our child's behavior is greatly influenced by the way we react to what he has done. Our reactions help to determine whether our child will repeat his behavior or whether he will do something different. This statement is a very important part of a principle of behavioral psychology.

The principle states that a behavior is influenced or affected by how the environment ---- people, places and things ---- immediately responds to the behavior. Perhaps without realizing it, you have used this principle many times.

On the occasion when you told your child what a good boy he was after he cleaned up his room, you used the principle. When you sent your child to his room for fighting with his brother, you used the principle. When I gave Kim a cookie after she started to cry, I used the principle. In each of these examples, a particular behavior occurred first ---- cleaning up a room, fighting, and crying.

In addition, there was a reaction to each behavior ---- the child was praised, sent to his room, or given a cookie. By these actions, we have influenced the previous behaviors and have helped to determine whether those behaviors will occur again in the future.

Lang, who is presently coaching a club team in Italy's professional volleyball league, told sina.com that she was considering the offer by the US Volleyball Association. "Right now I'm still considering their offer but I will answer them soon," Lang said. "If I don't take the job, I have to give them enough time to find someone else."

Lang, 45,won Olympic gold in 1984. She later coached the Chinese women to silver at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the 1998 World Championships. She has also coached at New Mexico University in the United States where her daughter was born and lives.

16About three hundred words in the English language come from the names of people. Many of these words are technical words. When there is a new invention of discovery, a new word may be coined after the inventor or scientist.

It is interesting to observe how many common English words have found their way into the language from the names of people. Lord Sandwich who lived from 1718 to 1792 used to sit at the gambling table eating slices of bread with meat in between. As the Lord was the only one among his friends who ate bread in that way, his friends began to call the "bread" for fun. Later on the word became part of the English language.

The word "boycott" means to refuse to have anything to do with somebody or something. It comes from a man called Captain Boycott. He was a land agent in 1880 and he collected rents and taxes for an English landowner in Ireland. But the Captain was a very harshman. He treated his poor tenants very badly. His tenants decided not to speak to him at all. Eventually word got back to the landowner and the Captain was removed. Young people do not have to go to school. They can do many activities outside, like playing sports and swimming at the beach or the pool. They like the sunshine during the day and the warm summer nights. People have written and recorded hundreds of songs about summer. These are some of our favorites.

One of the most famous songs about summer is from George Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess. He wrote the music in nineteen thirty-five. The opera takes place in the southern United States. It opens with these words: Summertime and the livin' is easy. Fish are jumpin' and the cotton is high. Leontyne Price sings the song.

The nineteen fifties and sixties produced many songs about teenagers enjoying their summer vacation from school. The songs are about having fun, swimming in the ocean, driving in cars. However, for some teenagers, summer vacation was not all fun and games. Some of them had to work to earn money.

This is something she had done ever since she was a child. David thinks it is not a good idea to ring so far, to spend too much, and to say so little.

"If there were an accident." He says, " They'd know soon enough. Bad news travels fast."

But Linda has promised that she would ring. "However," she says, "it doesn't cost much when you just think that it's the other side of the world. It's only six pence per second (每秒六便士). "

"If you're on that telephone for less than one minute, I'll eat my hat," David says, "And one minute's nearly four pounds."

"That's no more than you'd pay for a new hat," Linda answers.

She has asked the man at the hotel desk to get her the number. The telephone rings. Linda picks it up.

"Hello, Mum. Is that you?" She says.

"Six pence per second, "David reminds her.

"Hello, love." It is Mrs. Lee, Linda's mother, speaking from London. " I can hear you very clearly just like you are in the next room. It's a better line than when you called me from your office. Do you remember? I shouted at that time, and still you couldn't hear me sometimes. "

"Yes, Mum." Linda puts in. "I just wanted to ring to …"

"I remember how you rang when you went to Betty's house to eat, when you were a little girl. And then when you …" Mrs. Lee is a great talker.

"Nearly four pounds." says David.

Linda tries to tell her mother that it is time to say goodbye.

"Yes, all right, "says Mrs. Lee," But you will write, won't you, as you did when you were at work …"

Once again, Mrs. Lee talks about the past, and there is no stopping her.

"Four pounds fifty," says David.

23Babies sleep about eighteen hours a day. Mrs. Thatcher and Napoleon both said they only needed to do it three or four hours a night. Sleep. No one can live without it. But how much do we really need?

Research by the National Sleep Foundation in Washington says that we all need eight hours' sleep every night. Scientists have found that people who sleep for less than six and a half hours a night are more often ill than people who sleep for eight hours. Going without sleep also increases the chance of serious illness. Workaholics工作狂) who sleep for less than five hours often die young, and do less well at work.

The scientists found that adults usually sleep for seven hours a night, with 32% sleeping less than six hours.

It also says that the idea that we need less sleep as we get older is completely untrue.People have no idea how important sleep is to their lives, Dr. Thomas Roth, director of the Foundation says.Good health needs good sleep.

But not too much of it, says Professor Jim Horne of Loughborough University.Sleep is like food and drink, he believes. You would always like to have a little bit more, but that doesn't mean you need it. Professor Horne studied a group of people who could spend as many hours as they wanted in bed, after ten hours they didn't find it any easier to get up in the morning. The sensors will work through the central home computer, and they will do much more than just turn the fires and lights on and off for you. They will detect faulty electrical appliances, isolate them so that they cannot harm anyone, and then warn you that they need repair. They will detect fire and if you are out of the house, the computer will call the firemen. It will also call the police, should the sensors detect an intruder非法闯入者). You will open the door using your personal card--the one you use for shopping--maybe using a number known only to you.

Nasreddin said nothing. He thought, "This is some foolish person who has no work to do and goes about telling other people what to do and what not to do."

The man continued on his way.  Of course, after a few minutes, the branch fell and Nasreddin fell with it.

A few days later, one of these letters came into the hands of Herman's boss at the bank; someone had given it to him at a party. The next morning, Herman's boss asked him to come into his room and said, "Herman, I have some very good news for you. The bank of Ruritania is setting you free!"

28One day a teacher was giving her young students a lesson on how the government works. She was trying to explain the principle of income tax.

"You see," she began, speaking slowly and carefully, "each person who works must pay part of his or her salary to the government. If you make a high salary, your taxes are high. If you don't make much money, your taxes are low."

"Is that clear?" she asked. "Does everyone understand the meaning of income tax?" the students nodded.

"Are there any questions?" she asked. The students shook their heads.

"Very good," she said, "now, I would like you to take a piece of paper and write a short paragraph on the subject of income tax."

Little Joey was a slow learner. He had lots of problems with his study, but this time at least he seemed to understand the assignment(任务). He grabbed his pen, and after a few minutes, he handed the teacher the following composition:

29In 1963 the leader of the Labor Party made a speech explaining plans for the Open University. The Open University is an educational system which would make use of television, radio and correspondence courses. Many people laughed at the idea, but it became part of the Labor Party's program to give educational opportunity to those people who had not had a chance to receive further education. The Open University has been a great success in one respect. About 6,000 students of all ages get degrees every year. It is disappointing, however, that the great majority of students are from middle-class, educated backgrounds. But there also have been a number of men and women in prison, who have taken courses successfully and obtained degrees.

Students of the Open University receive their lessons and lectures in their homes, by means of special TV and radio programs. More than 40,000 people applied, but only 25,000 people could be accepted for the first courses in 1970. By 1980 there were about 60,000 undergraduates. Written work is corrected by part-time teachers who meet their students once a month to discuss their work with them and to set them on the right track. Science students are given mini-laboratories which can be set up in their own homes.

30In Europe many people died during the Second World War. As a result, at the end of the war there were many orphans there. A man called Hermann Gmeiner wanted to help these children.

His idea was simple. He wanted orphans to have a home, and he wanted them to have the care and kindness of parents. Gmeiner asked people to give him some money. With this money he built the first SOS Children's Village at Imst, in Austria. It opened in 1949. This is how the SOS Children's Village started. The letters SOS stand for "Save Our Souls." This means "Please help us!". An SOS Children's Village gives help to orphans.

Hermann Gmeiner's idea for helping orphans soon spread all over the world. By 1983 there were 170 SOS Children's Villages in the world. People in many countries give money to help the villages. Today the children from the first village are grown up. Now some of them work in other SOS Children's Villages.

In SOS Villages orphans live in family groups. There are several houses in each village. The biggest villages have 40 or 50 houses! Between seven and ten children live in a house. A woman lives with each group of children and looks after them. She gives the children a lot of love and kindness. She cooks for them and makes comfortable, happy home for them. The children go to school, they go out with their friends and they go into town.

31Time spent in a bookshop can be most pleasant, whether you are a book-lover or merely there to buy a book as a present. You may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a sudden shower. Whatever the reason, you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings. You soon focus on some book or other, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent too much time there and must hurry off to keep some forgotten appointment.

This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is the main attraction of a bookshop. A music shop is very much like a bookshop. You can range round such places to your heart's content. If it is a good shop, no assistant will approach you with the greeting, Can I help you? You needn't buy anything you don't want. In a bookshop an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished reading. Then, and only then, are his services necessary.

Once a medical student had to read a textbook which was far too expensive for him to buy. He couldn't obtain it from the library and the only copy he could find was in a bookshop. Every afternoon, therefore, he would go to the shop and read a little of the book at a time. One day, however, he was disappointed to find the book missing from its usual place. He was about to leave, when he noticed the owner of the shop making a gesture to him with his hand. Expecting to be scolded, he went towards him. To his surprise, the owner pointed to the book which was put away in a corner. I put it there in case anyone had a desire to buy it! he said, and left the delighted student to continue his reading.

32According to a Xinhua News Agency report, residents of China's five largest cities spent about 643 Yuan (US$80.37) each on sport in 2005, with Beijing topping the survey at about 880 Yuan (US$110) per person. (The five cities were Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Wuhan and Chengdu).

Chinese are more willing to part with hard-earned cash in pursuit (追求) of fitness than they were ten yeas ago. In addition to participating in a variety of fitness (健康) classes, many are now even seeking private training. Almost every new fitness or entertainment (娱乐) product or idea finds a willing audience among the public, whether riding bicycles or engaging in "hot" yoga.

A young organizer of a Beijing folding-bicycle club said, "We take exercise not only for our own fitness, but considering our social responsibilities. For example, every day we ride folding bicycles to and from our work places. This is our way of helping reduce pollution in Beijing. "

The city's elderly actively participate in many of the city's sports teams. In the early mornings in the park, it is easy to meet groups of the elderly using the national fitness facilities or practising taiji and kendo.

One participant said," we do not want to bring any burden to our children, so we care more about our health than ever before."

34I arrived in the United States on February 6,1966, but I remember my first day here very clearly. My friend was waiting for me when my plane landed at Kennedy Airport at three o'clock in the afternoon. The weather was very cold and it was snowing, but I was too excited to mind. From the airport, my friend and I took a taxi to my hotel. My friend left me because he had to go back to work. He promised to return the next day.

Shortly after my friend had left, I went to a restaurant near the hotel to get something to eat. Because I couldn't speak a word of English, I couldn't tell the waiter what I wanted. I was very sad and started to make some gestures(手势), but the waiter didn't understand me. Finally, I ordered the same thing the man at the next table was eating. After dinner, I started to walk along Broadway. I did not feel tired, so I continued to walk around the city. I wanted to see everything on my first day. I knew it was impossible, but I wanted to try.

When I returned to the hotel, I was tired, but I couldn't sleep because I kept hearing the fire and police cars during the night. I lay awake and thought about New York. 36Two years ago, my husband bought me a bike. If you live in a town, it is often faster than a car and you don't have to worry about parking. You leave it anywhere. As it has a seat at the back and a basket at the front, I can take my little daughter to school, to the library, to the shops, to anywhere.

I use it most in summer when the weather is warm and dry. It can be very unpleasant in winter when it is cold and the rain is heavy.

You must, of course, be careful on a bicycle. Accidents are not the only problem, though. One day I went shopping and came back to find my front wheel missing. It was a long walk to the bicycle shop. Now I have three strong locks.

My husband uses my bicycle sometimes for short journeys. He says it is better than waiting for a bus. He still uses his car for longer journeys, but I think that all day's sitting down is making him fat and lazy. On my bicycle I get a lot of exercises and fresh air, and this makes me feel a lot younger.

37Newspapers, along with reporting the news, educate, entertain, and give opinions. An important way of reading a large, big-city newspaper is to put it into different sections. Can you find these separate sections: world news, national and local news, sports, business, entertainment, opinions, ads? Does your paper have other sections?

News stories give facts, not the reporter's opinions. Some newspaper editorials (社论) come out with the writer's name, but many newspapers only carry editorials without putting the writers' names on.

You can be a better reader if you know what to expect in a newspaper. For example, you can expect headlines to leave out unnecessary words. You can expect to find the most important facts in the leading paragraph (the first paragraph) of a news story. You can expect important news items to be on the front page. You can expect less important items to be on the inside pages.

Most of all, the more you know about news of the present time, the more you will understand what is in the newspaper; important stories are generally presented one day and followed up on following days. So, an important way to read newspapers is reading one frequently.

It was the national championship for kids up to 10 years old. She came to the semi-finals (半决赛).

When she was 11, she won a national championship for girls up to 12 years old. In order to continue her career, Jelela left Serbia and went to the United States. At that time, she didn't speak any English. And her family did not come with her. It was a hard time.

However, it was a good learning experience for Jelela. "It makes me more independent and stronger as a person. I know how to do everything by myself so I don't have to depend on my parents or somebody else to do it for me," she said.

39The AIDS virus has been around for a very long time, but the spread of the disease within the last twenty years or so on such a scale has caused real concern. It seems that in the 1980s the principal carriers of the disease were homosexuals (同性恋者), drug users and prostitutes(娼妓). Now it is becoming evident that heterosexuals (异性恋者) also spread the disease, that children can be born with the virus and that patients in hospitals are being infected too.

Just as the WHO fought the spread of children's disease throughout the world in the 1960s, so now they must again use education to fight this killer disease. The organization proposes to write newspaper articles and books, and to make videos and TV programmers. These will be translated into the major languages of the world so that as many people as possible can be educated about the danger of AIDS.

However, we are still faced with two big questions. Is educating the public enough if we are to control the spread of AIDS? Does the WHO have enough money and resources for hospitals throughout the world to help and care for sufferers? One fact is becoming clearer and that is that the WHO has not focused enough on the need to educate medical staff. There are still hospitals and health centers in some parts of the world which do not accept AIDS patients, while there are others where too little care is taken to prevent the spread of the disease.

40Languages are remarkably complex and wonderfully complicated organs of culture. They contain the quickest and the most efficient means of communicating within their respective culture. To learn a foreign language is to learn another culture. In the words of a poet and philosopher, "As many languages as one speaks, so many lives one lives." A culture and its language are as necessary as brain and body; while one is a part of the other, neither can function without the other. In learning a foreign language, the best beginning would be starting with the non-language elements of the language: its gestures, its body language, etc. Eye contact is extremely important in English. Direct eye contact leads to understanding, or, as the English saying goes, seeing eye-to-eye. We can never see eye-to-eye with a native speaker of English until we have learned to look directly into his eyes.

42All over the world people enjoy sports. Sports help to keep people healthy, happy and help them to live longer.

Sports change with the season. People play different games in winter and summer.

Games and sports often grow out of people's work and everyday activities. The Arabs use horses or camels in much of their everyday life; they use them in their sports, too.

Some sports are so interesting that people everywhere go in for them. Football, for example, has spread around the world. Swimming is popular in all countries near the sea or in those with many rivers.

Some sports or games go back to thousands of years ago, like running or jumping. Chinese boxing, for example, has a very long history. But basketball and volleyball are rather new. Neither one is a hundred years old yet. People are inventing new sports or games all the time.

People from different countries may not be able to understand each other, but after a game they often become good friends. Sports help to train a person's character. One learns to fight hard but fight fair, to win without pride and to lose with grace.

"Come on! That sounds like an accident. Let's see what's happened."

They ran to where the noise came from. As soon as they got there, they could see what had happened. A small car had knocked into the side of a truck. The accident had happened in a quiet street with only four houses in it. Peter and Jenny were the first ones to reach the accident. No other people came. "We must be the only ones who saw the accident," said Jenny. They found that both the car driver and the truck driver were hurt.

"Peter," said Jenny, "run back down the road to Mrs. Jones' house. Ask her to call the policemen and the ambulance(救护车). Hurry, I'll stay here."

Peter ran as fast as he could.

There was nothing Jenny could do but wait. She knew that when people were hurt in an accident, they shouldn't be moved.

"Is there anything I can do for you?" asked the President.

The soldier obviously didn't recognize Lincoln, and with some effort he was able to say in a low voice, "Would you please write a letter to my mother?"

A pen and paper were provided and the President carefully began writing down what the young man was able to say:"My dear mother, I was badly hurt while doing my duty. I'm afraid I'm not going to recover(痊愈). Don't grieve too much for me, please. Kiss Mary and John for me. May God bless you and father."

The soldier was too weak to continue, so Lincoln signed the letter for him and added, "Written for your son by Abraham Lincoln."

The young man asked to see the letter and was astonished when he discovered who had written it. "Are you really the President?"he asked.

"Yes, I am," Lincoln replied quietly. Then he asked if there was anything else he could do.

47、One summer, the library in Texas in the United States was having a terrible problem. It had grown too big for its building and had to move to a newly-built library across town. Everything was finished and paid for, the librarians(图书馆人员) found out that they hadn't left enough money to move their mountains of books across the town. Even the cheapest moving company was going to ask for several hundred thousand dollars to pack and move the books. What could they do? Finally one clever librarian had a bright idea. She said the move was going to take all summer and during that time, the library would be closed. Why not ask everyone to come in to borrow 20, 40, or 100 books? At the end of the summer they could return them-to the new library. The idea worked beautifully and not only did the library save a lot of money, but also people read a lot of books.

I was going to have my examination the next day. "When can I go to bed?" I asked myself. I didn't answer. In fact, I dared not.

The clock struck twelve. "Oh, dear!" I cried. "Ten more books to read before I can go to bed!" We pupils are the most pity creatures in the world. Dad does not agree with me on this. He did not have to work so hard when he was a boy. The clock struck one. I was quite desperate (绝望的) now. I forgot all I had learned. I was too tired to go on. I did the only thing I could. 50、Benjamin Franklin was born in 1706 in Boston, Massachusetts. His mother and father were of Puritan (清教徒的) religion. They left England and moved to the English colony of Massachusetts in order to escape persecution (迫害) for their religion. In Boston, Franklin left school when he was ten years old and worked for his father for two years. Then he went to work on his brother's newspaper. He became the editor of this paper when he was sixteen. Because he wanted to be independent, he went to Philadelphia. There he bought his own newspaper. He worked hard and saved his money. And by the age of 24 he was one of the most successful men in Philadelphia.

In 1732 Franklin published a book POOR RICHARD'S ALMANAC(历本). Most almanacs contained information for farmers, such as information about the days and weeks of the year and about the weather. 51、A characteristic of American culture that has become almost a tradition is to respect the self-made man - the man who has risen to the top through his own efforts, usually beginning by working with his hands. While the leader in business or industry or the college professor occupies a higher social position and commands greater respect in the community than the common laborer or even the skilled factory worker, he may take pains to point out that his father started life in America as a farmer or laborer of some sort.

This attitude toward manual (体力的) labor is now still seen in many aspects of American life. One is invited to dinner at a home that is not only comfortably but even luxuriously (豪华地) furnished and in which there is every evidence of the fact that the family has been able to afford foreign travel, expensive hobbies, and college education for the children; yet the hostess probably will cook the dinner herself, will serve it herself and will wash dishes afterward; furthermore,  the dinner will not consist merely of something quickly and easily assembled from contents of various cans and a cake or a pie bought at the nearby bakery. On the contrary, the hostess usually takes pride in careful preparation of special dishes. A professional may talk about washing the car, digging in his flowerbeds, painting the house. His wife may even help with these things, just as he often helps her with the dishwashing. The son who is away at college may wait on table and wash dishes for his living, or during the summer he may work with a construction gang on a highway in order to pay for his education.

52、Agnes Miller was one of the earliest leaders of the women's liberation movement in the United States. She was born on a farm in Missouri in 1892. She had a very happy life as a child. She was the only daughter and the youngest child of five. Her parents and her brothers always treated her as their favorite.

In 1896 the family moved to Chicago. Three years later they moved back to St. Louis where Agnes spent the rest of her childhood. She enjoyed her years in school and was a very good student of mathematics. She was also quite good as a painter.

It was when Agnes went off to college that she first learned that women were not treated as equals. She didn't like being treated unequally but she tried not to notice it. After graduating from college she tried to get a job in her major field, physics. She soon found it was almost impossible for a woman.

Agnes spent a full year looking for a job. Finally she gave up in anger. She began writing letters to various newspapers. An editor in New York liked her ideas very much. 53、What is your favourite colour? Do you like yellow, orange, red? If you do, you must be an optimist, a leader, an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement. Do you prefer greys and blues? Then you are probably quiet, shy and you would rather follow than lead. If you love green, you are strong-minded and determined. You wish to succeed and want other people to see you are successful. At least this is what psychologists tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of colour preference, and the effect that colours have on human beings. They tell us that we don't choose our favourite colour as we grow up. If you happen to love brown, you did so as soon as you opened your eyes, of at least as soon as you could see clearly.

A yellow room makes us feel more cheerful and more comfortable than a dark green one, and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. On the other hand, black is depressing. Light and bright colours make people not only happier but more active. It is a fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or dark grey.

Remember, then, that if you feel low, you can always brighten your day or your life with a new shirt or a few colourful things. Remember also that you will know your friends and your enemies better when you find out what colours they like and dislike. And don't forget that anyone can guess a lot about your character when you choose a piece of handkerchief.
