Snap is the most prominent example; after Snap rebuffed Facebook’s attempts to buy the firm in 2013, for $3bn, Facebook cloned many of its successful features and has put a damper on its growth.
put a damper on...
damper是“挡板”的意思,put a damper on...,在...
说起“阻碍”,还有一些小的动词,比如 block, obstruct, impede, hinder, hamper, thwart, stymie, get in the way 等,此外,也可以用名词来表示,比如 barrier, obstacle, roadblock,还有 a stumbling block.
再补充一个词组:put up barriers to...
America, meanwhile, is putting up barriers to Chinese firms.
写作时开头我们通常会这样写“With the rapid development of...”
Yet far from joining the labour force, women have been falling away at an alarming pace.
at an alarming pace表示“以惊人的速度”,用来形容速度之快,同理,我们还可以用at a(n) astonishing/shocking pace来表示速度之快。
此外,我们也可以说spring up, roar ahead, boom, thrive, blossom, prosper等,比如:
Internet companies were springing up.
In the emerging world universities are booming: China has added nearly 30m places in 20 years.
Negotiations over the so-called Regional and Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) have for years crawled along at a snail’s pace.
It suddenly dawned on me that this express was not roaring down the line at ninety miles an hour, but barely chugging along at thirty.
