1. Dad was really ALREADY mad at me for tearing up the sod, so I knew I was in for it.

tear up: to tear something into small pieces, in order to destroy it

be in for something: to be going to experience something unpleasant very soon

造句:The weather forecast says we're in for heavy rain this evening.

2. And in less than a minute, he reduced all of our hard work to nothing.

reduce:to bring something or somebody into particularly undesirable state

A heavy rain reduced our paintings to trash.

3. Right when it looked like we were going to get in an all-out fight, we got ambushed from the street.

ambush意思是“埋伏,伏击”,这里的got ambushed相当于were ambushed. get作系动词用法

all-out: complete and with as much effort as possible

We made an all-out effort to get the project finished on time.

4. There is only one comic slot, and up until now this kid named Bryan Little has been hogging it all to himself.

slot: a position in a company or organization

The only slot in this department has been hogged by a  illiterate man.

5. But lately, Bryan's been using his strip to handle his personal business. I guess that's why they give him the axe.

axe: an abrupt dismissal from job/ a situation in which a government, a company or an organization decides to end something or to get rid of a worker or a job.

Over 500 staff are facing the axe.

6. I had a taste of what's is like to be famous at my school when I won honorable mention in this antismoking contest they had.

The famous movie star won honorable mention of Oscar.

7. I don't really want to be partnered up with a kid who doesn't draw noses, anyway.

partner up: to act as someone's partner in a sport, game, dance, or activity.

They partner up and throw water balls at each other.

1. As soon as I heard the news, I knew I had to try out. ''Wacky Dawg" made Bryan Little a celebrity at our school, and I wanted to get in on some of that kind of fame.

something makes somebody something: “某事让某人成为…” those stories make me a hero/ gold mines make me a millionaire

get in on: to be involved in or benefit from something when there is an opportunity

If you'd like to get in on this offer, call now.

2. I heard the garage door open and I saw Dad coming outside. He marched right out carrying a snow shovel, and I thought I was going to have make a run for it.

I heard the garage door open在这里open是形容词用作garage door 的宾语补足语。

I see the kid crying/ knocked down/ excited...

相似的表达比如have a try/ do the cleaning...

造句:I see a kid crying in the street. With nothing can crank him up, I just decide to use my lollipop and have a try.

Today I got totally ambushed by my younger brother. Due to his rotten teeth my folks took him to visit the dentist. So at noon, I just called a beef pizza, and read his favorite comic strips on the couch. Then I heard the door open and I saw him coming in with his watery eyes. He just thought I hogged the whole pizza, and decided to have an all-out fight with me. To be honest, I really didn't want to get in on this stupid fight, so I just shook me head, marching toward my room. Guess what happened? My younger brother began to hit me with his pillow bomb, and the last piece of pizza just fell on the ground, disappearing in our dog's mouth in the blink of an eye.
