Words and expressions

1. Science, demystified, is just another nonfiction subject. 

demystify: to make a subject that seems difficult or complicated easier to understand

仿写: This book aims to demystify medical treatments.

2. This is no place for fanciful leaps or implied truths.

fanciful: imagined rather than based on facts – often used to show disapproval

仿写: We love him because he is full of fanciful stories.

3. I was elated by his overnight change into a writer who had learned to write sequentially, and so was he. 

elate: to fill with high spirits, exhilaration, pride or optimism

仿写: Don't let your sober face elate you.

4. As the bat closes in, it may shout faster, to pinpoint its prey.

pinpoint:  to discover or explain exactly the real facts about something or the cause of a problem

仿写: It’s difficult to pinpoint the cause of the accident.

5. You can achieve the same rapport, whatever your subject.

rapport: friendly agreement and understanding between people

仿写: He built up a good rapport with the children.

Reflection

今天读的内容是科学技术。一看到这个标题的时候,其实我的内心还是有点小崩溃的。我一直认为阅读理解里面的科普文是我的难点,缺乏背景知识,以及大量的专有名词使我看到科技类文章就想退缩。我也一直对我的学生说,这类文章比较难理解,看到作者说的一句,我真是汗颜了。They were  told at an early age by a chemistry ora physics teacher that they don’t have “a head for science.”

  看完文章,其实也发现真的没有那么难,希望今后能积极面对科技类阅读,当然,科技类写作是我更愿意尝试的文体了。Writing  is thinking on paper. Anyone who thinks clearly can write clearly, about anything at all.
