Lesson 7 Too late 为时太晚
The plane was late and detectives were waiting at the airport all morning. They were expecting a valuable parcel of diamond from South Africa. A few hours earlier, someone had told the police that thieves would try to steal the diamonds. When the plane arrived, some of the detectives were waiting inside the main building while others were waiting on the airfield. Two men took the parcel off the plane and carried it into the Customs House. While two detectives were keeping guard at the door, two others opened the parcel. To their surprise, the precious parcel was full of stones and sand!
From One Of The Detectives's View:
Last Wednesday, police station were reported that thieves would try to steal a valuable parcel of diamonds from South Africa. A few hours later, we were ordered to go to the airport to prevent it from happening. The plane we 'were waiting'[=> waited 170119] was late, so we were waiting there 'for the whole morning'[=> all morning]. When the plane arrived, some of my colleagues were waiting inside the main building while others were waiting on the airfield. Two man[=> men 170119] took the parcel off the plane and entered[=> carried it] into the Customs House. - secure/safe 这里考虑secure是因为secure有锁牢的意思. 又查了一下, 感觉burglar-proof 或 anti-theft 比较好.
- entrust
- if you entrust sth important to sb or entrust them with it, you make them responsible for looking after it or dealing with it.
- 这里应该要写 entrusted transport company with taking it to this city 才是对的.
- alarmed: If someone is alarmed, they feel afraid or anxious that something unpleasant or dangerous might happen.
- nervous: If someone is nervous, they are frightened or worried about something that is happening or might happen, and show this in their behaviour.
- 貌似 in and around 用 at 来代替就可以了.
- be replaced with/by. -- ~ A as B, replace A ~ with/by B, be ~ed with/by B
- substitute: if you substitute A for B or A substitutes for B, A takes the place or performs the function of B. 这里表达的是 the stones and sand were substitute for the diamonds. 如果以thieves的视角可以用这个词.
- displace: 因客观原因被替换. 如 手机代替固话, 人被迫迁徙
