20200403-What I Learned from Online Contest(线上比赛复盘)

分享昨天的一篇备稿speech,结合Pathways Level 4的一个项目《管理在线会议》(Manage online meeting)对上周末进行的H3小区演讲比赛从组织角度进行复盘。


You may attend the speech contest on last weekend. How about your feeling? As a speaker, you may feel a little  confusion because you can’t see the reaction of audience during your speech. You may worry that your network is going offline. As one of facilitators, I get chance to be fully involved in organizing this online contest. Here are some of my reflections about what I learned from this event. 

你也许参加了上周我们举行的在线演讲比赛。感觉如何?作为演讲者,也许你会有点迷惑,因为在你演讲时不能看到观众的反应;也许你会担心自己的网络可能掉线。我作为比赛的一名辅助者,有机会参与了比赛组织的全过程。这里是一些我从这次比赛中学到收获的总结。

Number 1, before the contest, the most important thing is find my inner expectation to this project. This is the first online contest in TMs. I heard that there are some accidents from other district. For instance, when it’s time to announce the table topic to speakers, the contest chair found that  his PowerPoints couldn’t open and he couldn’t remember the question. So he had to introduce the table topic question to contestant by memory. The constant is confused, ‘Pardon me, what’s your question?’ Then he repeated several times. Dear fellows, do you think this chair did it right? How many times should the contest chair introduce the topic in contest? The answer is two times, ’name topic, topic name’. So my expectation is that we should organize a smoothy, professional and high quality contest. This is the point, find your vision before the work.

第一点:比赛之前最重要的是找到自己对这件事的内心期待。这是我们第一次组织头马的线上比赛。之前听说了一些其他大区比赛发生的小状况。例如当比赛主席准备向选手宣布即兴演讲题目时,发现自己的PPT打不开了,而自己也不能完整的记住所有题目。于是他只好凭记忆向选手公布题目。选手也很迷惑,问他:你的题目是什么?于是他只好再解释了几遍。小伙伴们觉得这位比赛主席的处理方法恰当吗?在即兴演讲比赛中应当向选手念几遍题目?答案是两次,即:选手姓名,题目;题目,选手姓名。所以我对这次比赛的期待是我们的比赛一定要顺利、专业且高水准。所以第一点收获是在做事情之前先找到自己的愿景。

Number 2, do rehearsal like formal game. We hold a demo meeting one week before the formal contest. We build the WeChat group to recruit meeting rules such as SAA, timer, ballot counter, demo speaker, chief judge and contest chair. We invite some members attend the demo contest as the contestants, we select the winner speaker according to the contest rules and give them award. This demo meeting is the key milestone in our plan. I almost lost sleep the night before the meeting. I got up at four o’clock to complete prepare the rules introduction paper and sent to team members on early morning. After we successfully hold demo contest, I have great confidence to the coming contest. So the second point is that do rehearsal with the highest standard. 

第二点:像正式比赛一样进行彩排。我们在比赛前一周进行了模拟比赛。我们建立了微信群来招募会议角色,包括SAA、时间官、计票员、示范演讲者、主裁、比赛主席。我们邀请了一些会员作为选手参加模拟比赛,并按照比赛规则评出获胜者、颁发奖状。这次模拟比赛是我们计划中的一个关键里程碑。在模拟比赛的前夜,我几乎失眠了。早上四点钟左右起来把需要沟通的比赛规则内容整理完,然后在早上发给了比赛组织的团队成员。在成功举行了模拟比赛之后,我对接下来的正式比赛心里就有底了。所以第二点收获是以最高的标准去进行彩排。

Number3, Don’t leave anything to chance. You may know the Murphy's law, whatever can happen will happen. Especially, when you think something may  go wrong, there might really be something wrong. For example, I think Tiger is an IT boy, he is familiar with Zoom operation. And he should know to record meeting video. So I don’t communicate withe him about this thing. As a result, there will be problems in this session. So the third pint is that communication is necessary in every session of online meeting.

第三点:不要有侥幸心理。你也许了解墨菲定律——任何可能发生的事情就有可能真的发生。特别是不好的事情,当你觉得哪里不踏实可能出错,那么最后出错的地方往往就是这里。例如我认为虎哥是一个IT男,他很熟悉Zoom操作,他应该知道录制会议视频。如果我根据自己这个“应该不会有问题”的预设,而没有就这件事与虎哥进行沟通和确认,那么最后的结果是这个环节大概率会出现问题。所以第三点启发是在组织线上会议时,每个环节的沟通都不能少。

Number 4, embrace people, accept imperfection.When we try our bets to pursuit a successful result, the most benefit we can learn is find the beauty of humanity. During this contest, I see excellent qualities in many people. The contest of H3 lasted for 5 hours. Who was the hardest person in this meeting? The judge team need to stay focus all speakers performance and make the ballot in very short time. The timer needs to account time for each speaker, they have no time to enjoy the speech. So I am touched by people’s enthusiasm. We can always find space for improvement, but we needs embrace people’s imperfection. The bets result is that people get growth with things get down.

第四点:接纳人,接受不完美。当我们致力于追求成功的结果时,最大的收获是我们能够发现人性的美。在这次比赛中,我看到了许多人身上的杰出特质。H3小区的比赛进行了将近5个小时。谁是最辛苦的人呢?举例来说,裁判团队需要保持全程关注,根据选手的表现在很短的时间内完成评分。时间官需要为每位选手计时,他们根本没有时间欣赏演讲。所以真正让我感动的是每位参与者的全情投入。我们总能发现需要继续提升的空间,但我们需要拥抱人的不完美。最佳结果是事情做成了,人也得到成长。

In summary, in my point of view, to organize a successful meeting is easy for toastmasters. To learn something make yourself and your team members get growth is the core objective. Hope you enjoy the experience in toastmasters. 

总而言之,在我看来,头马会员组织一次成功的会议并不是难事。学到一些能够帮助你和其他小伙伴获得成长的收获才是我们的核心目标。希望你享受自己的头马之旅。
