The reading passage presents three problems caused by the trend that people are reading less literature. However, the professor in the lecture argues that all these adverse effects are exaggerated.

First, the author of the reading maintains that the literature is the best form to provide the intellectual stimulation, so the sharp decline in literature reading makes readers miss out on benefits. On the other hand, the lecturer rebuts this argument by saying that books of other genres, scientific and history books for example, can also fulfill the function of intellectual stimulation. They are well-written, creative, and of great quality, able to successfully stimulate readers' imagination.

Second, the reading text contends that reading more superficial best-sellers and watching more trivial forms of recreation, instead of reading more literature, has lowered the level of culture. On the contrary, the lecturer does not agree with this point of view. She explains that culture has changed, and many new forms such as music and movies speak more directly to the current concerns than literature does, despite the fact that they are not in a written form. In other words, listening to a song or watching a movie definitely will not lower the level of culture.

Finally, the writer of the reading thinks that today many gifted writers lack an audience and receive less support from publishers, leading to the decline in writing. Contrary to what is stated by the writer, the professor argues that having less support from the readers and publishers sometimes is the authors' fault rather than the readers'. It is because modern literature is intended to be difficult to understand, and even the early generations will not read much of the today's literature.
