2. 体会这个词 (进阶篇)

“appeal”可以作动词也可以作名词使用,作为名词它可以表示“上诉”,“恳求”,不过我们今天要学习的是它作为名词,表示“吸引力” “感染力”的用法。当我们想表达“吸引力” “魅力”时,除了想到用“attraction” “more popular” 造句外,还可以想到用 appeal。

我们想说经典的文学作品有持久的魅力,就可以说:

The classics have timeless appeal. 

(经典的文学---the classics; 持久的 ----timeless;)

我们现在常说的“为…打call”,其实也是在说为某人或某物做点事情,让他/它更受欢迎。比如我们在社群中就一直向大家推荐  William Zinsser 的写作圣经 On Writing Well:

Phenomenal English has been broadening the appeal of On Writing Well.

“appeal”前面也可以加形容词,表明在某一方面的吸引力,比如 commercial/visual/aesthetic appeal,分别指“商业上的/视觉上的/艺术上的吸引力。

比如有些画作,看多了就不觉得它好看了,就可以说:

Some paintings lose their aesthetic appeal over time.

这一期的《经济学人》介绍了澳大利亚的治国之道,在写道为什么有些人选择移民澳洲时,有这样一句:

The main appeal of Australia to their families, they say is that it is not racked by civil war.

澳大利亚对他们吸引力主要在于,澳大利亚没有遭受过内战。

1)使用《牛津英语搭配词典》查“appeal”,了解它的常用搭配。

considerable, great, growing, obvious, powerful, special, strong 

相当大的吸引力;极大的魅力;日益增强的感染力;明显的吸引力;特别的魅力

have, hold 有感染力;具有吸引力:

His views hold no appeal for me. 他的观点我不感兴趣

broaden, extend, widen 将感染的范围扩大;增加吸引力:

We are trying to broaden the appeal of classical music. 我们正努力让更多的人喜欢古典音乐。 lose 

失去吸引力/ 魅力

2)翻译下面的句子:

《经济学人》吸引了许多想提高英文写作的学生。

The Economist has appealed so many students who want to improve their English writing.

(参考翻译:The Economist has wide appeal for students who want to improve their English writing skills.)

4造句:

He has been broadening the appeal of Seven Habit of Highly Effective people.

Computer games have wide appeal for teenagers.
