mindset 3

Tomorrow a new school year will start, but I am not happy at all because I was given two of the worst classes in my grade. The students in the two class are students left behind after students with better grade are chosen first to better classes. You can imagine that these students have  bad learning habit and have little interest in study. There is no light in their eyes and there is no hope in the face.

But what said above seems that I have a fixed mindset. I assume that the ability of students in the class is poor. But the fact is that they basic knowledge of English is not solid. What I should do is not complain and blame their ability but help them build solid foundation. After all, Test score tell where a student is but it didn’t tell you where a student end up. What I should do is to classify them according to their test score. Some get 60 while some can’t get 60. For those with 60 above, they should pay attention to knowledge in the textbook. For those with less 60, they should make up for the knowledge they lack in junior high. What a person in the world can learn, almost all persons can learn.

Different praise leads students to different paths. Ability praise pushed students into fixed mindset while effort praise pushed students into growth mindset.

From this point of view, when students get good grade, I should pay more attention to the efforts they have made rather than praise their ability.
