On December 15, the peace between a tiny house community and local zoning officials in the town of Peterborough, New Hampshire ended. 25 residents in the community were ordered to leave. Former tenants are suing the village’s owner who rented out homes that are not up to code. Tiny house residents faced a Catch-22 and could not get an occupancy permit for there was no building code for tiny houses. The local officials recognized the fact that tiny houses were impermissible under the local zoning code and not permitted as full-time residences. State legislators tried to introduce a bill to allow all tiny houses on residential plots but failed ultimately. Tiny houses are attractive and affordable for many residents but do not comply with the local zoning code. However, the pursuit of quality housing required by local zoning boards will make many people have no home to live.
