'Excelsior.' Celebrities Pay Tribute to Comic Book Legend Stan Lee Who Has Died at 95

On Monday, the world learned of the passing of Stan Lee, the 95-year-old co-creator of many of Marvel Comics's most beloved franchises, including Spider-Man (蜘蛛侠), the X-Men (X战警) and the Incredible Hulk (无敌浩克).

Excelsior!

这个词是老爷子生前惯用的口头禅,是他非常喜爱的一个词,今天在社交媒体上人们也纷纷用来悼念斯坦·李。

Wikipedia上的介绍为:Excelsior, a Latin word often translated as "ever upward" or "still higher". 该词来自拉丁语,通常译为不断向上,精益求精。

“Excelsior” has long been Lee's catchphrase. In the mid-1960s, not long after Atlas Comicsrebranded as Marvel, Lee wrote a monthly column for the comics publisher in which he'd sign off with “Excelsior!”—a Latin word meaning “ever upward.” He told io9 in 2007 that he wanted a unique word to himself that his rivals at the time wouldn't be tempted to copy.

catchphrase

表示“名言,流行口号,时髦话,流行语(因某演员或政治家首先使用,以后人们一听到就会想起此人的),英文解释为“a short well-known phrase made popular by an entertainer or politician, so that people think of that person when they hear it.

相关背景

美国两大漫画公司巨头之一漫威公司创建于1939年,当时名为“Timely Comics”,于1951年更名为亚特拉斯漫画(Atlas Comics),1961年后正式更名为如今的漫威漫画(Marvel Comics)。

rebrand

表示“给(机构,公司,产品等)重塑形象,采用新名称”,英文解释为“to change the way that an organization, company, or product is seen by the public”,举个:

Businesses may decide to rebrand for several reasons.

企业可能因为种种原因而重塑形象。

“I used to have a lot of expressions that I would end my comic book columns with: Hang Loose, Face Front, 'Nuff Said, and I found that the competition was always imitating them and using them. So, I said I'm going to get one expression that they're not going to know what it means, and they won't know how to spell it. And that's where excelsior came from, and they never did take up on it, thank goodness.”

2007年,斯坦·李在接受采访时曾表示,他也想过用其它词(比如Hang Loose, Face Front, 'Nuff Said等)来作为漫画专栏的结尾,但发现总是会被自己的竞争对手“抄袭”,所以就选了这么一个没人认识的词...

Of course, it is being taken up now as a way to remember the late, great icon.

late

此处的late不是“晚的,迟的,迟到的”,而是指“已故的”,英文解释为“You use late when you are talking about someone who is dead, especially someone who has died recently.”

icon

icon除了表示电脑上的“图标”,此处指“偶像,崇拜对象,象征物”,英文解释为“someone famous who is admired by many people and is thought to represent an important idea”,举个:

a sixties cultural icon

一个60年代的文化偶像

a fashion icon

时尚偶像

Besides his work as a writer and publisher for Marvel, Lee was also known for his memorable cameos in Marvel movies, where he would pop up to play a side character, becoming a cult favorite in front of the camera as well. “They say you should never meet a childhood idol. They are wrong,” Star Wars's Hamill wrote, calling Lee “revolutionary.”

cameo

/'kæmi-əʊ,ˋkæmɪ͵o/

表示“ (电影或戏剧中名演员的)客串演出”,英文解释为“a short appearance in a film or play by a well-known actor”,如:cameo role/appearance

a cult favorite

cult作形容词表示“热门的;流行的;被视为偶像的,受到狂热崇拜的”,英文解释为“cult is used to describe things that are very popular or fashionable among a particular group of people.”,如:

a cult figure/movie 偶像人物/风靡一时的影片。

>一文中我们也接触到另外一个意思相近的词:blockbuster,表示“(尤指因内容精彩而)非常成功的书(或影片)”,英文解释为“a book or film that is very successful”,举个:

a blockbuster movie/novel

电影大片/风靡一时的小说

而除了blockbuster, hit一词也有类似含义,表示“风行一时的事(如电影、戏剧、歌曲等)”,英文解释为“something such as a film, play, song etc that is very popular and successful

此处的favorite/favourite不再是形容词,而是作为名词,表示“受宠的人;受偏爱的人”,英文解释为:a person who is treated with special kindness by someone in authority. 如:

the teacher's favourite 老师的宠儿

favorite/favourite也可以指“最有希望获胜的人(或动物);比赛中最被看好的人(或动物)”,英文解释为“the person or animal most people expect to win a race or competition”举个:

Brazil are favourites to win this year's World Cup.

巴西队是今年世界杯赛的夺冠热门。

revolutionary

这个词应该都比较熟悉,《星球大战》中扮演卢克·天行者的马克·哈米尔(Mark Hamill)用这个词来赞扬斯坦·李,表示“革命性的,突破性的,创新的”,英文解释为“completely new and different, especially in a way that leads to great improvements”,作名词则是,“革命者;革命家”。
