Tencent has announced new limits on the amount of time minors can spend playing the company's online games, even as investors worry that China may extend its historic crackdown on the private sector to the gaming industry.

Those fears were stoked Tuesday after Economic Information Daily — a business newspaper owned by Xinhua News Agency, which is China's official news outlet — published a lengthy analysis that used terms such as "opium" and "electronic drug" to describe the harmful effects of gaming on children.

周二,中国官方新闻机构新华社旗下的商业报纸《经济参考报》发表了一则长篇分析,其中用“鸦片”和“电子毒品”等字眼来描述游戏对儿童的危害,由此引发了上述担忧。

The post mentioned Tencent's popular video game "Honor of Kings" as one of the games young people are addicted to, and said that "industry insiders should be vigilant of the harmful effects of online games."

Tencent's shares fell over 10% in Hong Kong on Tuesday. The stock rebounded 4.7% on Wednesday as Economic Information Daily republished its article — though with some changes. The new version scrubs the terms "spiritual opium" and "electronic drug."

Tencent said in a statement that its new restrictions will limit the ability for minors to play "Honor of Kings" to an hour on non-holidays and two hours on holidays. It also called for an industry-wide discussion on "the feasibility of banning primary school students under the age of 12 from playing games."

腾讯在一份声明中表示,其新的限制措施规定,未成年人在非节假日可玩《王者荣耀》的时长为 1 小时,节假日为 2 小时。腾讯还倡议全行业讨论“全面禁止未满 12 周岁小学生进入游戏的可行性”。

In recent years, the Chinese government has sought to reverse what it sees as a growing trend of gaming addiction in young people. According to rules Beijing had announced in 2019, gamers aged under 18 are banned from playing online games between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m.

中国政府认为年轻人群体内存在日益增长的游戏成瘾趋势,且近年来都在试图扭转该趋势。根据中国政府于 2019 年出台的规定,未满 18 岁的玩家不得在 22 点至次日 8 点间玩网络游戏。
