“pig out”千万别翻译成“猪出来了”,要被笑死了!

pig篇

❖ pig out (on)

字面意思好像是“猪出来了”?但真正意思其实是“大吃一顿”、“狼吞虎咽”。

to eat (a specific thing) gluttonously or to excess.

例句:Once a month, my friends and I get together and pig out on pizza.

❖ Pigs might fly.

人们常说“站在风口,猪都能飞。”但猪本身是不会飞的,因此pigs might fly指“不可能发生的事”、“无稽之谈”。

❖ pig-headed 

这里可不是我们日常生活中说的“猪头”的意思,pig-headed用来形容一个人固执。

dog篇

❖ dog people

千万不要以为这是骂人的话。dog people是指爱狗人士,同样还有cat people。你是哪种?

❖ dog days

中文中很多与狗相关的短语都带有贬义,英文则不然。dog days是指热天,三伏天的意思,也指一段停滞或不活跃的时期。

这个短语是卖命工作的意思,同时也表示做这种工作很没有尊严。

❖ top dog 

大佬,或者竞争中的夺魁者、优胜者

a person who is successful or dominant in their field.

例句:He was a top dog in the city.


cat篇

❖ fat cat

不要想当然把 fat cat理解为“大肥猫”。根据具体语境,可以表示非常富有或有权势的人,通常是政商界人士。

a wealthy and powerful person, typically one involved in business or politics.

例句:These days it seems as though the fat cats do better and better, but the workers do worse and worse.


❖ rain cats and dogs

天上下猫和狗?其实是指倾盆大雨、瓢泼大雨。很常用的一种地道英文表达,《面纱》、《玩具总动员四》中都曾出现过。

❖ To put the cat among the pigeons

引发骚乱或混乱,通常是故意为之。把猫咪扔进鸽子堆里,后果可想而知。

❖ bell the cat

❖ love rat 

爱情骗子;感情骗子;负心汉,尤其指那些经常在恋人背后出轨的人。

例句:Love rats are terrible. Stay away from them.


❖ love birds

这个短语可以按字面意思理解。

❖ black sheep

字面意思是黑羊。因为羊通常是白色,因此它用来指代有辱家族的人;害群之马。

❖horse sense 

常识

common sense.

例句:Horse sense tells me that it would be suicide to do such a thing


❖ monkey business

并不是猴子生意,而是胡闹、欺骗、恶作剧。

mischievous or deceitful behavior.

例句:Now go take a shower, and no more monkey business or you'll be late for school, she says grumpily.


❖ donkey work

大家都知道,拉磨的驴子的工作辛苦而枯燥乏味。如果你正在做donkey work,想办法辞职吧。

the boring or laborious part of a job; drudgery.

例句:The supervisor  got a research student to do the donkey work.
