每日英语第360期：grandstand

今天我们要讲的这个词很好记，grand(大)加上stand(站)，意思是“大看台”、“观礼台”，就是那种赛场一侧或周围阶梯形座位的看台。

用英语解释就是：the main seating area of a stadium, racetrack, parade route, or the like, usually consisting of tiers with rows of individual seats.

Grandstand一般是名词，同时还是动词，作动词时的意思很好玩，值得学会。

简单说，grandstand作动词的意思就是“哗众取宠”、“作秀”、“爱演”。

To behave dramatically or showily to impress an audience or observers; to pander to a crowd. 

To play or act so as to impress onlookers

Seek to attract applause or favourable attention from spectators or the media.

来看个例句：

Many politicians prefer to grandstand on hot-button issues rather than enact tough policy changes.

很多政客热衷于利用热点事件哗众取宠，而不愿推行实际的政策变革。

英美报纸上还经常会有political grandstanding的说法，意思是“政治作秀”。

很明显grandstand作动词时的意思是从名词意思“大看台”引申来的。为了博眼球，为了要掌声的作秀，也就是哗众取宠了。
