The Mixed-Up Chameleon |

The Mixed-Up Chameleon by Eric Karl.

On a shiny green leaf sat a small green chameleon.

It moved onto a brown tree and turned brownish.

Then it rested on a red flower and turned reddish.

When the chameleon moved slowly across the yellow sand , it turned yellowish.

You could hardly see it.

How many chameleons are there in this page?

I can see four.

One on the ground,  one on the trunk, one on the leaf and one on the flower.

Chameleons can change colors according to their surroundings.

It's awesome, isn't it?

When the chameleon was warm and had something to eat , it turned sparkling green.

But when it was cold and hungry , it turned and dull.

I think green and grey are chameleon's usual colors.

Have you ever seen a chameleon?

I think you haven't.

We can try to find it in the zoo.

What do chameleons usually eat?

Let's check it out in the next page.

When the chameleon was hungry , it sat still and waited.

Only its eyes moved-up , down , sideways-until it spotted a fly.

Then the chameleon's long and sticky tongue shot out and caught the fly.

That was its life.It was not very exciting.

But one day...

Eeek, they eat flies!

It's disgusting.

But we have bread, pandas eat bamboo, tigers eat meat, goats eat grass, each creature has their kind of food.

So chameleons eat flies, it is nature.

the chameleon saw a zoo !

It had never seen so many beautiful animals.

What animals can you see in the picture?

Let's find them together.

There is a polar bear, a turtle, a seal, a flamingo, a fish, an elephant, a fox, a deer and a giraffe in the zoo.

A man and a lady were visiting the zoo.

The chameleon thought:How small I am , how slow , how weak !

I wish I could be big and white like a polar bear.

And the chameleon's wish came true.

But was it happy?No !

Look, the chameleon turned white.

We've just mentioned that chameleons were usually green or grey.

But turning colors is chameleon's skill.

I wish I could be handsome like a flamingo.

Oh, the chameleon sprouted two red wings and two red bird-like feet.

Things became interesting.

I wish I could be smart like a fox.

Look at its tail, it had a red fluffy tail now.

Just like the fox.

Was it satisfied?

Let's check it out.

I wish I could swim like a fish.

Oh, look, four orange fins sprouted from the body of chameleon.

Could it swim then?

Try to swim, chameleon.

I wish I could run like a deer.

What's new in this page?

Look at the chameleon's head, two antlers sprouted out on its head.

Pay attention to the two sides of this page.

When the chameleon got a new part from an animal, the animal would appear in the left side of the page.

And the color of the animal would appear in the right side.

I wish I could see things for away like a giraffe.

And it got a long long yellow neck, just like the giraffe.

The long long neck would help him see things far away.

A giraffe and the color yellow appear in the two sides of this page accordingly.

I wish I could hide in a shell like a turtle.

Look, it had a green shell.

But the shell was too small for it to hide inside.

And it looked weird.

I wish I could be strong like an elephant.

But it only got elephant's big head, large ears and long trunk.

It wasn't strong at all.

And didn't look like a chameleon then.

I wish I could be funny like a seal.

After the chameleon made that wish, four flippers were added to its body.

I cannot tell what animal It is now.

It had a little of this, a little of that, and only remained a little of a chameleon.

I wish I could be like people.

Just then a fly flew by.

The chameleon was very hungry.

But the chameleon was very mixed-up.

It was a little of this and it was a little of that.

And it couldn't catch the fly.

Look, it got the gentleman's hat and the lady's umbrella.

But what animal it was then?

I really don't know.

Do you know?

And itcouldn't get the fly.

Oh,poor chameleon.

It looked just like a monster.

It must wanted to change back to itself.

I wish I could be myself.

The chameleon's wish came true. And it caught the fly !

Finally, the chameleon realized that being itself was the best thing.

And when it caught the fly, a rainbow appeared in the sky.

Remember that, together, the colors of other animals formed a rainbow.

The things of others may look nice, but when we eager to be others, we may lost ourselves.
