You never know your potential!

I finished reading "History of TPRS" just now, got to know the TPRS was invented by Blaine Ray in 1990s.And the reason he invented this new teaching methodology is fuuny and unexpected.

Mr. Ray was a Spainish teacher, teaching in California, USA. He was not quite an excellent teacher at tbe beginning. In fact, he was fired once because of his non-engaging teaching method.

He worked in a new school, and was called to the new principal's office. Guess what? The principal told him if his poor teaching could not be improved, he would be fired.

Under this circumstance, Blaine Ray started to treat his work seriously. He couldn't afford to lose this job again.

Fortunately, after studying and researching Stephen Krashen's TCI hypothesis(teaching through comprehensible input)and Asher's TPR method (Total Physical Response, Ray got a short period of success in the class. After encounting difficulties again to capture students's attention and imagination, he invented TPRS, which was initially called TPR+ Story. By adding stories on top of TPR, he even fostered his better relationship with all of his students.

【Stephen Krashen's《Principles and Practice in Second Language Acquisition》introduces his five hypotheses:

Acquisition-learning Hypothesis

Natural Order Hypothesis

Monitor Hypothesis

Input Hypothesis

Affective Filter Hypothesis】

James J. Asher

James J. Asher, Ph.D. Originator of the Total Physical Response, known worldwide as TPR

So,it seems sometimes, due to survival needs, people can be 'forced ' to invent a teaching methodology. Isn't it marvelous?

Just like that Chinese saying, "Misfortune might be a blessing in disguise".

You never know your potential !  Don't set an limitation for yourself!  Always keep trying!   Just like Blaine Ray - the inventor of TPRS!
