Cleanweb Hackathon 2013

The Beiijing Cleanweb hackathon was a great success thanks to our sponsors, judges, and participants! The goal of the event was to create impact by applying information technology to resource constraints and sustainable urbanization. Participants were tasked with building applications leveraging web, mobile social technology coupled with available open data sets and APIs. Thanks to our organizing partnerships, we were able to provide access to data sets on topics including: sustainable transportation, building energy efficiency, and pollution mapping.

Participants from diverse cultures and industry backgrounds put their heads together over the weekend to create innovative solutions to environmental challenges. The cooperation and team work was absolutely incredible. Two thumbs up! Thanks again to everyone for taking the time on the weekend to come out and for making this event awesome! We look forward to seeing everybody again at our future events.

On the second day of hacking, each of the four teams presented their great ideas to a panel of judges. The judges included: XIE Xing, Lead Researcher, Microsoft Research Asia, SHEN Nan, Senior Associate, Hudson Clean Energy Partners, ZHAO Lijian, Program Officer, Energy Foundation, and Justin Wang, Executive Chairman, Beijing Makerspace. Although the hackathon was never about winning, we were pleased to present a cash prize to the winning team.

The winning team created an app called BikeMe. The app was based on DataTang’s taxi pattern data; identifying key pick-up locations that could be used to re-conceptualize Beijing’s urban design, whether through commercial transport services, targeted bike sharing locations, or new commercial developments.
