他是谁?
He was raised by his mother alone in Scotland.
After he had graduated from one of top secondary schools in Scotland, he won a scholarship to study at the University of Glasgow (格拉斯哥大学) at the age of 14.
Later, he went to Oxford in which he learned the knowledge of European literature, but he disliked elite English education there.
Afterward, he returned to Scotland and gained public recognition for his well-received lectures, including various subjects such as history, economics and rhetoric, at Glasgow University. So he took the position as a professor and taught logic and moral philosophy at the University.
In 1776, he published his world-famous book, which is considered the bible of capitalism and lays down the cornerstone of modern economics.
Thanks to his high public profile, he was appointed commissioner of customs in Scotland and enforced laws to curb smuggling.
“No society can surely be flourishing and happy, of which the far greater part of the members are poor and miserable,” he said.
He was known for the concept of the “invisible hand” in his book, which helps many statesmen and leaders to make new economic policies and builds the solid foundation for free-market capitalism.
Based on his theory, one nation’s wealth shouldn’t be measured by the total of its gold and silver, but by the total of its production and commerce, also known as the gross domestic product.
