1. atonement= something that you do to show that you are sorry for something bad that you did
e.g. He said that young hooligans should do community service as atonement for their crimes.
2. ascetic= avoiding physical pleasures and living a simple life, often for religious reasons:
They live a very ascetic life.
3. indulgence= an occasion when you allow someone or yourself to have something enjoyable, especially more than is good for you:
Chocolate is my only indulgence.
4. renunciation= the formal announcement that someone no longer owns, supports, believes in, or has a connection with something:
the renunciation of violence
5 periphery= the outer edge of an area
= the less important part of a group or activity
e.g. Houses have been built on the periphery of the factory site
6. exaltation= a very strong feeling of happiness
7. orgiastic= An orgiastic activity involves wild, uncontrolled behaviour and feelings of great pleasure and excitement.
8. propaganda= information, ideas, opinions, or images, often only giving one part of an argument, that are broadcast, published, or in some other way spread with the intention of influencing people's opinions
e.g. At school we were fed communist/right-wing propaganda.
9. totalitarian= of or being a political system in which those in power have complete control and do not allow people freedom to oppose them
e.g. a totalitarian regime/state
10. obedience= the fact that people or animals do what they are told to do
He demands unquestioning obedience from his soldiers.
11. polarity= the quality of being opposite
