Abe seeks to warm Japan’s relations with China during Beijing visit

Seek to do sth.:  formal to try to achieve or get something 寻求,谋求。学校试图降低辍学率,Seek to reduce the dropout rate;

两个国家之间的正式关系用relations(注意一定是复数):[plural] official connections between countries, companies, organizations etc 〔国家、公司、组织等之间的〕(正式)关系,“外交关系” diplomatic relations;

Mr Abe’s visit is the first formal bilateral visit by a Japanese prime minister to Beijing since a crisis erupted over the Senkaku Islands, known in China as the Diaoyutai, in 2012. Mr Xi did reluctantly receive Mr Abe on the sidelines of an Apec summit in Beijing in November 2014, in an encounter remembered for the two leaders’ downcast faces and reluctant handshake.

V-I If violence or fighting erupts, it suddenly begins or gets worse in an unexpected, violent way.

Violence erupted after police shot a student during the demonstration.

Sidelines(注意自带复数),在外交新闻发布会文稿上经常会见到,表示“界外区域/场外”,这里则表示会议的“间隙”;

Downcast:downcast eyes are looking down〔眼睛〕目光向下的,低垂的,这个词用来形容人低落的心情再合适不过了,比如想表达宝宝错了,不说话,耷拉着眼帘的样子:be silent, eyes downcast.

Mr Xi did reluctantly receive Mr Abe in 2014,而且这还是一次“偶然相遇”(encounter)。

This week’s meeting between the two men represents the penultimate stage in Mr Abe’s long quest to normalise relations with China, which would culminate with a return visit to Japan by Mr Xi next year. The Japanese prime minister has been aided by Beijing’s fears of international isolation as the US president, Donald Trump, escalates his trade war, and also its desire to boost Japanese investment as economic growth slows.

One’s quest to do sth./ for… ;quest for可以完美替换上面提到的seek to do sth. :

N-COUNT A quest is a long and difficult search for something.

眼尖的同学们可以发现,这个释义其实已经包含了”long”这个概念了,所以原文的long可以删掉;

Culminate with/in…: if a process culminates in or with a particular event, it ends with that event

They had an argument, which culminated in Tom getting drunk.

“提振”这里用了boost, 比如boost tourism/confidence; 近义词有:facilitate/promote/enhance/further…

本段第二句比较长be aided by 跟了2个超长的名词词组,翻译的时候把名词词组转化为句子会比较符合中文表达习惯;

Japanese investment into China plunged in 2013-15 before stabilising in 2016 and increasing 5.1 per cent last year, according to China’s commerce ministry. China is also Japan’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade amounting to $300bn a year, compared with $200bn between Japan and the US.

Plunge暴跌,之前也有提过,近义词:slump/take a nose dive/crash/collapse…

The challenge for Mr Abe is how far to take rapprochement with China at a time when the strategic situation has not changed and Washington’s relationship with Beijing is heading towards confrontation. Japan’s business community is eager for better ties; the foreign policy establishment is more cautious.

the establishment of a good relationship between two countries or groups of people, after a period of unfriendly relations友好关系的重建,搭配介词between/with:

a rapprochement between our two countries

这段又出现了2个“关系”:relationship/tie

Ties: [usually plural,一般用复数] a strong relationship between people, groups, or countries〔人、团体或国家之间的〕关系,联系,如果提到要加强两国之间的联系,或者强调两国关系紧密,那么就可以用这个词:

Japan’s strong economic ties with the US

Relationship:[C] the way in which two people or two groups feel about each other and behave towards each other〔人或团体之间的〕关系,注意该释义包含feel这个词,强调双方的“感觉”,比如这里的confrontation,就表明双方都持不满的态度,如果说双方都对对方比较满意,关系友好:the friendly relationship between France and Britain.

While Mr Trump’s bellicose attitude to China has created the diplomatic opening for Mr Abe, he does not want to side with Beijing against Washington, or give any impression he is undermining US policy. “Japan has to be extremely careful of the US view when dealing with China,” said Mr Kawashima.

bellicose ['belɪkəʊs]:ADJ You use bellicose to refer to aggressive actions or behaviour that are likely to start an argument or a fight.

He expressed alarm about the government's increasingly bellicose statements.

一边,支持”:side with…to support or argue against a person or group in a quarrel, fight etc支持,站在…

He has the Democrats on his side.

或者take sides/take one’s sides,比如这里安倍的态度就是不能站边中国:Abe cannot take China’s sides under the circumstances.
