新闻内容包括：美国政府关门，移民危机，股市动荡。
第一个新闻，关于美国政府关门。
基本确定一直到新年，美国政府都不会开门了。和前些天的新闻一样，并没有多少进展。
政府的关门是谁在承担后果呢（who’s paying the price here for this fight in D.C.?）.
不少人没有工作或是工作得不到薪水（either working without pay or are just not working right now）。还有一些财政支出被削减了（that 1994 law cut off new funding for victims of sexual assault and abuse.）。新闻里有一个词lapse，表示流逝，失效（有点像什么计划或活动流产的意思）。assault 是表示侵犯的意思，abuse则是虐待的意思。这些联邦员工或是这些活动都在尽量来缩减开支来保持收支平衡（struggle to make ends meet），这里的make ends meet就是保持收支平衡的意思。
这些影响多少会对政客们有点压力，但大家也意识到近些年的政党们关没有因为政府关门付出啥代价。neither political party seems to have paid a real price for this .目前两党间在建墙和移民问题上都各不让步，试图阻止对方的法案，这样来增加谈判筹码。（They said the plan all along was to stop passing things so that they could negotiate.）
第二个新闻是关于不安定的股市。
几个月股市一直很惨，不过最近两天突然有回暖的感觉。（’stock prices were down across the board, and then as the afternoon wore on, everything suddenly changed’）.那股民都试图安全度过这个股市波动 （trying to ride out some pretty turbulent stock market swings），ride out就是安全度过，熬过难关。turbulent是指动荡的，stock market swings是股市波动。
对于股市的回暖，大家觉得也正常，因为股市并不反应的是当下的情况，而是对未来的预期。不过美联储提高了利率，因为担心经济过火，需要防止通胀超出控制。 they’re worried that the economy is running too hot. They’re worried about inflation out of control. That’s one of their mandates. 这个句子里，inflation就是通胀，mandate是指授权，规定。
不过市场到底是在变好还是变坏，各方面的意见都有，并有相关的证据。（there’s evidence for either scenario.） 不过专家提醒虽然股市的波动对大家会有一些影响，但也不用太担心。
第三个新闻是关于移民危机，主要还是说美国的那些收容站的问题。
目前美国正在改善那个收容所的状况（improve conditions for detained migrants），detained是指收容的，扣留的。相关部门一直在被监督中（under a lot of scrutiny）。之前报道的在收容所去世的小孩，尸检(autopsy)结果表明他被感染了流感(influenza).在形容收容所的状况时，有一个词，scramble, scrambling, 有攀爬，抢夺，混乱的意思。在这里应该表示情况一团糟的样子。
造成这一堵塞的情况与特朗普有关系，他的一个政策（metering policy）使得大家都跑向那些更远的边境处。meter是指测量，计量的意思。堵塞我们使用backlog这个词。asylum seeker 寻求庇护的人。smuggler 走私者。
由于堵塞太严重，达到他们处理的极限了（reach its limit），所以政府还寻求了其它机构的帮忙，其中有些机构是依靠大家的捐赠的，（rely on the goodwill of volunteers and online donation）.要不是动员这这些机构，好多人都要被扔大街上了（if it wasn’t for this community mobilization, these community - these families would be left on the streets）。
有政客去收容所进行了访问，他们对那里的情况感到震惊（they were appalled by the conditions.） appalled表示使充满恐惧。那里像一个车库的样子（garage-like space）,没有可饮用的活水(potable running water)，也没有私密的马桶（private toilets）。
