U.N. Priorities for a New, Better World

让我们共同缔造一个更美好的世界
                  --江泽民主席在联合国50周年特别纪念会议上的重要讲话精彩片断

in a few years time, mankind will bid farewell to the 20th century, full of vicissitudes, and enter the 21th century, a century full of promise. At this turn of centuries, it is of great significance that we are gathered here to commemorate the 50th aniversary of the United Nations--the widely representative and authoritative intergovermental organization of our age. We can use this opportunity to take a look at the past and future in a higher plane and share our views on how to turn the lofty mission of the United Nations into reality.

Fifty years ago, when the world war against fascism came to its victorious conclusion, the United Nations was born, which was a major event in the history of international relations. That the world went through two world wars in a short span of 30 years in the first half of the century left mankind not only unprecedented canage and destruction, but also painful and thought-provking lessons. The drawing up of the U.N. chater and the laughing of U.N. organizations met the needs of the times, reflect the strong desire of the world's people to eliminated the scourge of war, and mirrored the humanity's dream of building a new world of peace, equality, cooperation, and prosperity.

China is a populous country with a time-honered history. It is home of a splendid ancient civilization and a major contributor to human progress. Staring from 19th century, China was reduced to a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society, increasingly imporverished and backward. The Chinese people waged a protracted and unyielding struggle to uphold the independence, sovereignty and unification of their country and to realize its rejuvenation, which culminated in the founding of People's Republic of China in 1949. Right now, the Chinese people are advancing with confident strides on the road of building Socialsicm with Chinese characteristics, concentrate their energe on economic development and impovement of there living standards. Loving peace and desiring a development, the Chinese people are willing to cultivate friendly relations and cooperation with the people in the rest of the world and steadfastly persue a indenpedent freign police of peace. Even when China becomes stronger and more developed, it will not seek hegemony or pose a threat to any one. On the contrary, China, as an important force making for the maintenace of world peace and stablity, will make more greater contributions to mankind. If China, a country with  a quarter of the world' population, remains underdevelped in prolong poverty and backwardness, that will cause serious consequences to peace and stablity of the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large.

The politial leaders of our age have on their shoulders the historical mission of carring forward the cause of world peace, development and progress into the future. History is both fair and unmerciful, we must not fail the ardent expectation of the people through out the world. Let's join hands and work together to embrace the the new centry with a still better world.

                                                                        The End
