Abstract

Agnes Grey is a novel about a governess named ‘Agnes Grey’, written by Anne Bronte in 1847. The novel is said to be based on Anne Bronte's own experiences as a governess. Agnes Grey was Anne Bronte's maiden work, and as such it has a stronger stylistic connection to the works of Jane Austen than her later writings do. Like her sister Charlotte's Jane Eyre, this is a novel that describes how to maintain the precarious position of governess, and how it affected a young woman.

In this paper, we are going to talk mainly about hopes of Agnes Grey. First, we shall introduce the brief process of Grey’s early life, and the certain characteristics formed during the time. Second, we display each hope of Grey and its ending and discuss the distance between Ideality and Reality. Finally we shall go to conclusion:

People should maintain one’s certain personality. In the face of reality, we may not able to realize our ideal. But we can gain happiness by keeping spiritual pursuance.
