In financial markets’ anxious start to 2016, equities have stolen most headlines. But investors’ worries are also playing out in currency markets. Three themes stand out. First is concern about China’s economy. Tumbling share prices are a symptom, but the yuan’s downward creep matters more. It hints of fleeing capital and feeds fears that China will try to help ailing manufacturers with an even bigger depreciation. That explains why other Asian exporters—Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan—have seen their currencies wilt. Second is commodity prices. The currencies of oil exporters, such as Russia, Mexico and Malaysia, will stay under pressure until crude prices find a floor (the American benchmark slid below $30 a barrel yesterday). Commodity-rich South Africa’s rand has been hit hardest, but the country belongs with Turkey in a third troubled category: economies reliant on foreign capital, just when investors are warier about emerging markets in general. It could be a rough year.
