1. All the money would have been worthless if legions of craftsmen hadn’t been willing to dedicate their skills and often their lives to making this not just another building, but a monument to human achievement.

If he should go to Qing Hua University, he would make full use of his time.

If he were to come here, he would tell us about it.

If he were free, he would help us.

If he studied at this school, he would know you well.

If I had seen the film, I would have told you about it.

If I had got there earlier, I would have met Mr. Li.

2.Certainly no other creature could conceive and create something of such sublime beauty. Case closed? Hardly.

Case closed

3. Some of the workers may well have been veterans of the First Crusade, an expedition to save the Holy Land from the infidel Muslims that was part religious frenzy, part military adventure, and part social fad.

Well have been里面的well非常值得关注,表示程度之高,如He is well into his 40s他已经

4.We like to think that our erratic behavior is a thing of the past, that we’ve outgrown the excesses of the Crusades. But nothing could be further from truth.

A thing of the past:过去的事情eg. Telegraph has already become a thing of the past.

Nothing could be further from truth.

Q: Are they a permanent part of the human condition, or can we do something about them?

In my opinion, even though I don't want to admit, they are a permanent part of human condition. The theory of materialistic dialectics illustrates that everything in this world is full of contradictions and everything is developed and progressed in the contradictory movement of itself. So does human behavior. Thus, beauty and the beast is just a normal condition of humanbut which side will take the lead depends on various factors.

First, it is the common interest thatreally matters. For the beauty side, as mentioned in the article, most of our uniquely human accomplishments are the result of a combination of a cooperation and individual achievement. But do you think we can achieve all of those without the same goal to live a better life? There’s no doubt that cooperation is based on common interest. Think about it, scores of musicians bring Beethoven’s the Ninth Symphony to life because they love music, an army of people help Neil Armstrong to step out on the surface of the moon because they want to explore the space and make contribution to American aerospace industry and legions of craftsmen built Chartres cathedral because they regarded it as a monument to human achievement. For the beast side, it’s quite similar and the war is the perfect example.

Second, we are making trade-offs between the contradictory decisions which is the human nature. Often, we know the pros and cons of a certain behavior but at the moment when we really act that behavior we just want to satisfy the most urgent one of our various desires. For example, people know that drunk driving is illegal and harmful to one’s health but they love the feeling of getting drunk because it’s excited and cool. And this phenomenon is related to the social cultures and peer pressure.

As a summary, we can see that contradictionsare a permanent part of human condition. However, we can make efforts to make a difference to some extent.
