China Should Abolish the Household Registration System

From my point of view, I am in favor of china’s abolishing the Household Registration System or what we call the hukou system mainly because of the inequalities and the following harmful consequences brought by the current hukou system. There is no denying that now, in China, people with urban hukous have advantages over rural residents in almost every aspect of life, such as education, medic treatment, employment, housing, etc. The inequalities in these important social issues do harm to the development of economy and society. With regard to the education, in our hukou system, it is common that people with urban hukous especially those for big cities like Beijing can enjoy much more education opportunities and obviously better education infrastructure than people living in the rural areas where there are still a large number of children lacking basic education, let alone multiple choices of schools or groups of excellent teachers. Considering the mass migration of the population from rural areas to cities, the educational inequality can be seen from the situation the rural children are facing where they will probably be left behind since their praents are migrant workers but they cannot enter the local schools without urban hukous. Consequently, the inequality in education causes the imbalance of education resources, which will dissatisfy the rural residents and do harm to the personnel training. In terms of medical treatment, urban people can enjoy more complete medical services as well as more detailed medical insurance for not only severe diseases but also minor aliments. What is more, if a person with the allochthonical medical insurance wants to be reimbursed for the money he pays for the treatment, he will confront with a lot of trouble like the complicated procedures. It brings inconvinence to rural residents and violates their interests. Last, about the employment. It is not unusual that some companies require the job seekers to have local ruban hukous. Therefore, the job seekers with rural hukous are not given the equal chance as the others with urban hukous. In the long term, it will lead to the shortage of labor force and the retard the urbanlization process.       To conclude, current hukou system brings far more problems than the points I have demonstrated above. So it is advisable if we take measures to abolish it step by step.
