Day 14 The Renovation of a Kitchen

The kitchen has been turned from a 1980s’ old fashion, which was in your mum’s taste, into a modern one. The biggest change lies in the structure which is now fitted by knocking down the wall between the kitchen and the living room. Now, the kitchen is a semi-open area, enabling you to cook while talking to people in the living room. Another window is installed in the wall of the left corner adjacent to the garden and the place has become a solarium with a wooden table and six chairs, which is really a pleasant spot for a sun-bathing afternoon tea.

Almost all the appliances and furniture have been replaced. There are no stained tiles on the floor, which looked untidy, but overlaying wood flooring instead. A dining table with four rattan and wrought-iron chairs stands in the middle, also made in wood boards, taking the place of the round-the-corner countertop which could serve three people. New cabinets in L-shape along the wall was substituted for the old ones in C-shape. They have black marble countertops and most of them have wide drawers of big volume. There are no more eye-level cabinets but chaste shelves for bowls, dishes, and glasses.

Stove and oven are now integrated into one multi-function cooking appliance. The cooker hood is also upgraded into a powerful device, so don’t worry that hot air or smells may disturb your guest in the living room. The fridge was against the wall by the door, narrowing the entry of the kitchen. Now a high-end fridge has taken the place of a built-in cupboard beside the table in the corner.

The kitchen used to have only two ceiling fittings. But now there are two elegant white hanging pendants above the dining table along with a group of four mini ceiling lamps and seven spotlights for different functional areas including the countertops and the fridge. Five portrait and landscape paintings are on the wall above the right countertop. Houseplants on those two tables, the shelf and the wall adorn the kitchen, adding to the gaiety and life of it.
