“That' one difference between a dog and a daughter, I thought to my self later. A dog can do something every dog can do—dog paddle, for example—and we applaud with pride and joy. Imagine how much easier it would be if we could do the same with daughters! But we can't; that would be negligence.”

1.原句:As we hit each new price plateau, I tried to convince Jed that a fine violin was an investment, like artwork or real estate.
疑难点:如何理解 hit each new price plateau?
参考理解:plateau:  N-COUNT A plateau is a large area of high and fairly flat land. price plateau 价格台阶,即每个梯度会有不同的价格;hit: 触及、到达;hit each new price plateau 到达每一个新的价格台阶,从后一句可以看出,Amy在说服Jed买更好的小提琴,说明new price plateau指的是更高的价格台阶,当我们到达每一个新的价格台阶时,我就会尝试说服Jed,一个好的小提琴就是一项投资。
2.原句:We always know what the other is thinking—which form of psychological torture is being deployed—and we both can’t help ourselves.
疑难点:如何理解which form of psychological torture is being deployed?
参考理解:which form of psychological torture: 哪一种形式的心理折磨;deploy: V-T To deploy troops or military resources means to organize or position them so that they are ready to be used.
3.原句:She was also amazing with kids—or at least with Lulu, whom she seemed to take to instantly. Mrs. Vamos and Jed hit it off too.

疑难点:这里whom she seemed to take to instantly, hit it off怎么理解?

讨论:take to :PHRASAL VERB If you take to someone or something, you like them, especially after knowing them or thinking about them for only a short time.

4.原句:Mrs. Vamos then told Lulu that while she had the advantage of being naturally musical—something that couldn’t be taught—she lagged behind in technique.

疑难点:while这里的用法怎么理解?the advantage of being naturally musical这里怎么理解?

We can see how those violins sound tomorrow too,” she added. “I like the Italian, but maybe the French one will open up.”
疑难点:如何理解the Italian, the French one,和open up?
参考理解:the Italian, the French one指的都是小提琴;open up: If something opens up opportunities or possibilities, or if they open up, they are created.(使)(机会、可能性等)出现;(使)产生;这里指的是小提琴音色的展现;我喜欢意大利的(小提琴),但或许法国的这个小提琴会(有音色的可能性)出现、揭示,在这里可以延伸理解为惊喜。
1.原句:I had to keep my eyes on the ball. Mrs. Vamos’s message was crystal clear.
参考理解:on tha ball: aware of and quick to respond to new ideas and methods 机灵;留心;有见识keep one's eye on the ball这个常用语原先是来自球类运动,如网球、高尔夫球、垒球等,你一定要把眼睛看准了才能打到这些球。
Mrs.
2.原句:But the next morning, Lulu got up and on her own went to practice with Kiwon, so all was not lost.
疑难点:如何理解all was not lost?
参考理解:all was not lost: 还没有完全失败,还有机会。
3.原句:Vamos was surrounded by driven Asians, but I was all the more determined to astonish her, to show her what we were made of.
疑难点:如何理解but I was all the more determined to astonish her?
参考理解:astonish:to surprise sb very much使十分惊讶;使大为惊奇;使吃惊 all the more: adv.
What?” Jed asked. “Tell me you didn’t say what I think you said.”
So we’re actually making money the more we spend?” he would reply drily.
疑难点:如何理解making money the more we spend?
参考理解1:此处应该是the more..., the more的用法,省略了一个the more,完整的应该是So (the more)we’re actually making money the more we spend (on violin),Jed说他们赚的钱越多,花得就越多(买越来越贵的小提琴)
6.原句:I couldn’t believe it. Mrs. Vamos wanted to see Lulu again. I almost leaped out of my chair —and probably would have if at that moment I hadn’t seen Coco fly by our window followed by Aaron on the leash behind her.
