Presentation Skills 5: Deferring Questions

Presentation Skills 5: Deferring Questions

对话

1. Now, as we have already discussed there is a huge untapped market out there both in Asia, in other developing markets, and in the more mature markets for us to push into. Now of course, this represents an enormous challenge with enormous rewards for the winners, but for any new product we need a great marketing message and marketing campaign. It needs to be directed and focused at our target consumer, and needs to be pitched at exactly the right level. The question we must first address is of course, who is our target consumer and secondly what do they expect from the next generation Alphalaptop?

现在,我们已经谈过在亚洲及其它发展中市场和一些更成熟的市场有一个还未被开发的市场可以让我们推进。当然,这代表对赢家的巨大挑战和巨大收获,但对一个新的产品,我们需要一个好的广告词和市场推广活动。要针对我们的目标客户,程度也要正好。 我们要讲的第一个问题是,谁是我们的目标客户,第二问题是他们期望从下一代的Alpha电脑里获取什么?

2. Let's first of all tackle the first question. Our target consumer for the x420 is the middle class, white collar worker with an above average income. However, as we mentioned before the total number of computer owners is expanding rapidly and we need to broaden our audience for this product. For example, the x420 is also ideally suited to the younger student sector, who might use laptops both for study and gaming. There is no doubt that--

让我们先解决第一个问题。我们的x420目标客户是中产阶级和中等收入的白领。然后,我之前提到过,电脑拥有者的总人数在上升。我们需要扩大为这个产品的受众面。比如,x420很适合年轻的学生,他们可能用笔记本来学习或者玩游戏。毫无疑问……

1. Mr. Ford, if I could just interrupt a moment. You say that the computer is suitable for students, but don't you think the price of the x420 is just too much for most students?

Ford先生,我打断一下。你说电脑对学生合适,但你不认为x420的价格对大部分

学生来说太贵了吗?

2. Well, that's a fair point. If you don't mind I'd like to tackle your question a little bit later in the Q and A section. Is that okay?

嗯,这个问题很好。如果你不介意,我想在之后的问答环节里回答你的问题。好吗?

1. Yes, sure.

当然没问题。

2. Okay, so as I was saying, we have an exciting campaign planned for the x420. Firstly, we will have a nationwide television campaign, as well as advertising on radio and also in many computer publications. We also intend to--

好,那就像我说的那样,我们对x420安排了很精彩的活动。第一,我们有一个全国的电视推广,以及在广播上的广告和很多电脑出版物。我们也打算……

1. I'm sorry to stop you Mr. Ford, but do you really think that a television campaign is cost effective? I mean, how much is that going to cost?

我很抱歉打断你Ford先生,但你真的认为电视广告投资回报合理吗?我是说,要多少钱?

2. Well, I don't have the figures on hand, but I'd be happy to discuss those figures with you after the presentation. OK, let me just go on to talk a little more about the exciting campaign we have in store.

嗯,我手头上没数据,但我乐意结束后和你讨论那些数字。

好,让我现在就继续谈一下我们精彩的推广活动。

Upper-Intermediate – Presentation Skills 5 :  Deferring Questions

Now that you've studied this lesson on your own, it's time to use the following activities to practice the language you've learned with your teacher.

This lesson plan is designed for a 50-min one-on-one class focused on speaking practice and feedback.Opening chat --- 5 minutes

Class Activities: (30-35 minutes)

Objective: In today’s lesson, we look at how to present to and convince customers that your product is worth buying. However, at the same time, we look at vocabulary and strategies for deferring questions until the end of your presentation.

1) Read the dialogue with the students --- 5 minutes

Read the dialogue with the students line by line. Switch roles after the first run. Pay attention to students’ pronunciation; give feedback and help when needed.

2) Dialogue Comprehension ---- 5 minutes

Ask the student the following questions. The answers are in the dialogue:

What is the first question he says he needs to address? The second?

Who does he say is the target consumer for the x420?

Who might be another target group interested in the x420?  Why?

What are two strategies for their campaign they have planned?

Who does Mr. Ford call the “untapped markets”?

3) Key Vocabulary Check ---- 5 minutes

Use the key vocabulary from today’s lesson to complete the following sentences.

3.) Fluency Builder ---- 10 minutes

Let’s look at some great vocabulary and phrases to sound more professional and confident when talking about products and giving presentations.

#1.

“There are more markets for us to push into.”

This is a phrase that means to “move into” or to “develop and grow”.  It’s a good, assertive phrase you can use in a company setting to talk about growing your market.

#2. “Let’s tackle the first question.”

There are many different meanings of the word tackle. We can use it as a verb, like we do here. This means to deal with, handle, master, solve or undertake something, usually a problem or something quite difficult.  So, in the dialogue, the first question may be a challenge or something difficult to discuss.

#3.  “I’m sorry to stop you Mr. Ford.”

To say “I’m sorry to…..” is simply a polite way to make an announcement that may be considered unwanted or negative to the other person you are talking to.  It can be used in many different contexts. In most instances, it’s a way of being polite.

#4. “I don’t have the figures on hand.”

This is an adjective phrase that is synonymous to available, present, or in one’s possession. It’s a good phrase to practice to sound more native and fluent.

4.) Cultural Takeaway ---- 5 minutes

Dealing with questions in the middle of your presentation can surprise you! Have a strategy and phrases ready to use when this happens. With 3 steps you can easily defer the questions and deal with them later.

1)   Show appreciation for the question

2)   Defer the question

3)   Give a short explanation/Re-direct

Recommended phrases to help you naturally and professionally deal with deferring questions.

Great question……

That’s interesting……

Thank you for asking….

But

However

Unfortunately

Because of limited time   …………

I’ll answer that later in the presentation.

Let’s talk about that at the end.

Ask your student to point out the techniques and phrases used to defer questions in today’s dialogue.

5.) Review and assign homework: --- 5 minutes

Review today’s class. Encourage the student on where he/she did well; give feedback to where he/she needs to pay more attention.

Assign homework, i.e. the ‘Exercise’ part of today’s lesson. Student should complete it and submit it online. They will see an automatic score.

Have them listen to the dialogue again and see if their understanding has improved.

Remind students that they can save different vocabulary terms in the app or online and review them as flashcards.

Tell the student what the next lesson is.
