本章通篇讲的都是torture， Winston遭遇各式的严刑拷打， fists , truncheons ,steel rods , boots , syringe等等。刑讯逼供下，W屈打成招，he became simply a mouth that uttered ,a hand that signed ,whatever was demanded of him . His sole concern was to find out what they wanted him to confess, and then confess it quickly.

O’Brien 登场，手指只需轻轻拨动dial上的控制杆（不知是什么可怕的刑具，推测是可控制大小的电刑之类的东西），就对Winston施以mortal injury。身体的摧残加洗脑，告诉W他是精神错乱，他所认为的事实都不是真的，事实存在于党的思想中…that reality is not external. Reality exists in the human mind, and nowhere else .Not in the individual mind, which can make mistakes, and in any case soon perishes: only in the mind of the party. W 也一度在挣扎于2+2等于几，但是随着the needle of the dial had shot up …..risen up again. 身体上的极度折磨已经让W意识模糊…..

O’Brien 大言不惭，说这样折磨w是为了改造他，帮助他…to cure you! To make you sane! ….the thought is all we care about. We do not merely destroy our enemies, we change them. 对w进行完全的洗脑…we shall squeeze you empty ,and then we shall fill you with ourselves.
