Archaeology (考古学) is a magical gateway to the past. With just a few broken bits of pottery (陶器) or animal bones, we can find out how our ancestors (祖先) lived and how human society has developed.
On May 5, China listed its top 10 new archaeological discoveries of 2019. The discoveries provide important material evidence (证据) for us to better understand Chinese civilization (文明). Let’s take a look at some of them.
Jiegedong Paleolithic cave site, Shaanxi 陕西疥疙洞旧石器时代洞穴遗址
People have long been interested in the origin (起源) of humankind. It is commonly believed that all ancestors of modern humans came from Africa. But now, this theory (假说) may need to be reexamined.
Last year, Chinese archaeologists found human remains (残骸) and stone tools from 15,000 to 100,000 years ago in the Jiegedong Paleolithic cave. The discovery shows that humans have a long history of living in East Asia.
The findings provide key clues (线索) for further studies into the origin of modern humans in East Asia, according to experts.
Pingliangtai site, Henan 河南平粮台城址
You are quite familiar with modern cities, but do you know about cities in ancient China? The Pingliangtai site shows a city over 4,000 years old. It is square and has a symmetrical axis (对称轴), which means there was already advanced (先进的) urban planning (城市规划) at that time. There were also drainage pipelines (排水管道) made from pottery, showing how ancient people managed water resources.
A double-wheel rut (车辙) was also found at the site. It is the oldest one in China. It means that people could make two-wheeled carts (双轮车) as early as 4,000 years ago.
Nanhai No 1 shipwreck, Guangdong 广东“南海一号”南宋沉船水下考古发掘项目
Digging (挖掘) out treasure (宝藏) from a sunken (沉没的) ship? This is not a plot from an action movie, but an archaeological project. Nanhai No 1 is a ship that dates back to the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279). It sank in the sea near Guangdong while sending goods abroad.
The shipwreck was found in 1987. Over the last 30 years, more than 180,000 pieces of relics (文物) have been unearthed, such as porcelain (瓷器), gold and silverware (银器). The findings show how busy maritime trade (海上贸易) was during that period.
This is China’s first underwater archaeological exploration project. In 2007, the ship was raised out of the sea. It is stored in the “Crystal Palace”, a glasshouse museum in Yangjiang, Guangdong.
Top 10 discoveries
Last year, there were 1,096 archaeological projects in China, the most in history. It was hard for judges (评委) to pick the top 10. Because of the COVID-19 outbreak, the selection (评选) process was moved online. The final selection round was livestreamed for the first time. The livestream drew over 28 million views, according to China Daily.
