Last Christmas, accompanied by a 'guard of honour' of six pretty girls, the circus owner, Jimmy Gates dressed up as Father Christmas decided to take some presents to a
children's hospital. It was difficult for the traffic to move on because the baby elephant
he rode on was holding up the main street. A police approached Jimmy and told him
that he ought to have gone along a side street. Though Jimmy agreed to go at once,
the baby elephant called Jumbo refused to move. Therefore fifteen policemen had to
push very hard to get Jumbo off the main street. Such serious undertakings gave the
police a great deal of pleasure. As one of the policemen said, ‘it was fortunate that we
didn't have to carry him. Of course, we should arrest him, but as he has good record,
we shall let him off this time.'
