I Love Chemistry

Seriously, the topic could have been I HATE Chemistry, but chemistry itself, as one of these natural sciences, is innocent. So, I finally chose the topic I Love Chemistry.

As we all know, everything contains chemical substances on this planet, though some naive people believe there's something that is "all natural" and has no chemicals just like the ads told them. Also, there is a childish song named "Chemistry Is You, Chemistry Is Me". The song is pale, weak and of no beauty, but unfortunately, it's right. Chemistry studies chemicals. Its importance is needless to say. Even myself is, in a sense, a mixture of chemicals and how can I hate chemistry?

Although chemicals were made and used throughout history, the chemistry subject wasn't established until Robert Boyle published The Sceptical Chymist  in 1661. And the first real chemist should be Antoine Lavoisier. I called him "real chemist", because chemistry has a ambiguous relationship with physics, especially thermodynamics and quantum physics. Many masters in our chemistry textbook are actually physicists. Deep inside, I do feel physics is yet more graceful and intoxicate . Chemists just follow physicists when talking about philosophy of science.

All right, they are both natural sciences, and the journey of probing into the law of nature is magic and fantastic …or at least, to some of the students. You know, to be a graduate student of chemistry is not that easy. I have to admit that chemistry seems boring and strange to me sometimes. A student who wrote the essay Electron Band Structure In Germanium, My Ass  claimed that "Going into physics was the biggest mistake of my life". Well, I have not reached such a degree, but I can somehow understand the way he felt.

In conclusion, I have complex feelings towards chemistry. It's hard to describe it by either love or hate. After all, things are not always black or white. Maybe, only time can give the answer.
