The inspector asked the man what he was doing on the morning of the murder. The
man told the inspector that he was travelling on the 8 o'clock train to London for he
must be at work at 10 o'clock. He added that his emloyer would provide the inspector
with the proof of his existence. Then the inspector asked him whether a later train
would get him to work on time. The man claimed that he would never get on the later
train to work. After that, the inspector asked the man what time he arrived at the
station and whether he noticed anything unusual. The man alleged that he arrived at
the station at ten to eight and bought a paper. He contended that he didn't see anything
strange while he waited for the train. Eventually, the inspector revealed the fact that on
the morning of the murdur the man did catch the 8.25 train to get to work because the
8 o'clock train was broken-down and therefore taken off the line.
