Have you ever imagined traveling to the past? If so, how would you do it? Time machines are often used in cinema, but in Tenet , doors are used to travel across time.

The long-awaited sci-fi film directed by Christopher Nolan became a sensation domestically and internationally after its premiere. It centers around a man called The Protagonist (played by John David Washington) who saves the world by traveling through time to prevent World War III.

Like in his another blockbuster Interstellar, Nolan emphasizes excellent audio and visual affects in Tenet. Audiences could enjoy visually shocking aircraft crashes, stunning chase sequences and close quarters combat.

In one scene, a plane crashes into a hangar accompanied by a huge explosive noise. Rather than a special sound effect, the actual noise from a real 747 aircraft crash was used.

Audiences should expect to see many uses of “time inversion”, from vehicles seeingly moving backwards to combatants fighting in reverse.

“Time inversion”, based on a real theory of physics, drives the plot but also makes it more incomprehensible (难懂的). Simply put, if characters step outside of a blue door, they walk into a converted world, and everything moves backwards while their consciousness moves forwards. If they walk through a red door, they return to the normal world. By mixing the past and the future in one shot, the film risks confusing the audience.

Some Chinese moviegoers compared Christopher Nolan's new film "Tenet" to the mathematics paper of the national college entrance exam in Jiangsu Province.

"I don't even understand the question, let alone the answer," one fan joked on the social media platform Sina Weibo after watching the film.
