读到第七章节，了解到原来老头一直计划着写点东西，一开始老头只是随意的在本子上写写，慢慢地当他开始写这本回忆录时，可能由于年纪大的缘故，他在精神上和心理上很容易感觉疲惫，而他自己说到，由于年迈，写出来的回忆录失去了很原有的味道，甚至给人感觉是非常平淡无味的书籍。阅读这本书时，感觉越平淡的书籍反而让人越发觉得深刻，也佩服作者把人物刻画的栩栩如生的写作功底。

His recollections lost much of their flavour when they were written down; that story about Rushton and the sack of potatoes, for instance — it would seem quite tame in print.

当老头严厉惩罚学生时，卡瑟琳认为很多事情不能全部怪学生，因此请求老头原谅学生，但有时候的卡瑟琳并不总是这样的：

But she had not always pleaded for leniency . On rather rare occasions she urged severity where Chips was inclined to be forgiving . ‘I don’t like his type , Chips. He’s too cocksure of himself. If he’s looking for trouble I should certainly let him have it.  ’

在这里的pleaded 可以表示撒娇，卡瑟琳为了让老头原谅学生，所以撒娇了下。
