At Samsung’s Unpacked event earlier this month, the Korean tech giant showed half a dozen new products, including the Samsung Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Tab S7, Galaxy Buds Live, Galaxy Watch 3, and upcoming Galaxy Z Fold2. But buried in all the product announcements was a commitment from Samsung to provide its customers with updates to its Galaxy lineup for three generations.

Few details were provided at the time, and many questioned exactly what “three generations” meant. While most assumed it referred to Android OS upgrades, others speculated it may simply be One UI or security updates.

After a few weeks of speculation, Samsung has clarified its commitment. The company will offer three generations of Android upgrades for most of its Galaxy flagship and midrange lineup. The list of supported devices includes all Samsung Galaxy S20 and Note 20 devices, all Galaxy Foldables, as well as future products in the series. The forthcoming Galaxy Tab S7 and last year’s Tab S6 lineup, along with future Tab S products, are also on the list. Even a handful of its Galaxy A-series phones including the A71, A51, A90, and select upcoming A-series devices will make the cut.

The commitment is welcome news for Samsung smartphone owners and means nearly every product in its current portfolio will continue to get OS upgrades through Android 13. The original Samsung Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Tab S6 will see their final upgrades with Android 12. Samsung’s Galaxy S20 series will be first to get the Android 11 treatment, a decision that’s likely to rile some soon-to-be Galaxy Note 20 and Tab S7 owners. And with the Note 20 series coming on the heels of Android 11, it doesn’t simply mean you’ll be in line behind S20 owners, but the newer Note 20 devices will stop getting upgrades the same year as their older sibling.

According to Samsung, it plans to roll out an Android 11 upgrade to the Samsung Galaxy S20 series in 2020, though there is a lot of wiggle room in its announcement. A disclaimer states the Android 11 upgrade roadmap for the Galaxy S20 may vary by market or carrier. If you purchased an unlocked version of the Galaxy S20 you’ll likely be among the first to get the update. However, if you ordered through a carrier you’re likely going to wait longer since they carrier test and add additional tweaks before pushing updates.

The announcement is long overdue and puts Samsung on slightly more competitive footing with the likes of Apple’s iPhone lineup and Google’s Pixel smartphones. That said, day-of-release upgrades or even quick upgrades like iPhones, Pixels, and Android One smartphones enjoy, do not appear to be in the cards. With the exception of its commitment to upgrade the Samsung Galaxy S20 series to Android 11 later this year, the company has yet to commit to even a rough roadmap for annual OS upgrades.
