Newspapers are having enormous influence on people's ideas and opinions. Why is this case? Is it a positive or negative situation?

Newspapers, published usually on a daily or weekly basis, provide individuals with a wide range of information; they tremendously affect readers’ thoughts and perspectives. In my opinion, newspapers influence the way people think and behave positively and there are a variety of reasons behind this.
To begin with, although a newspaper can inform people the existing condition of politics, economy, entertainment, sports, business, industry, trade and commerce, the way of reporting may have a profound impact on their ideas and opinions. Newspapers can even form or modify the public opinions in a positive way by extensive media coverage on a particular hot topic.
Furthermore, newspapers not only report the activities of political parties and leaders but also criticize the policies and statements of the government or of the political parties in a fair way. Actually, a newspaper acts as a communication medium between the public and the government, by sharing government policies with common people and having their voice reach the governing authorities.
In addition, newspapers usually have editorials to interpret events and offer new angles or implications about their occurrences, which can definitely have an effect on the general public. Apart from offering news from home and abroad, newspapers often have information on gardening, cookery and fashion, as well as a small but popular section on jokes and cartoons which will influence readers’ perceptions imperceptibly.
More importantly, newspapers can also contribute in enhancing literacy. In a sense, a good newspaper is a reliable educational resource as well. Newspapers are more current than textbooks, so teachers can select articles from newspapers to boost students’ academic performance. Traditionally, newspapers contain numerous entertaining things like puzzles and crosswords for individuals of all ages; doing these mentally challenging activities benefit people considerably.
In brief, since the basic functions of a newspaper are to inform, to comment, to persuade, to instruct and to entertain readers, it is apparent that a newspaper exerts a strong influence on people's ideas and views.
