A goosenecked floor lamp with a glass bowl in the shape of a half-moon. It was more furniture than she had in the living room.

goosenecked

It's really vivid to portrait a lamp shaped in a gooseneck.

Once again, we fell into our spying positions, angling ourselves at the cracked door to see, while pressing our ears against the air. From there we could see pieces of the three figures who entered Cecile’s house. All wore dark colors. One had on a black jacket and a black beret. The other two, black T-shirts and black berets over Afros. We steadied our heavy, excited breathing to hear what we could.

This is a way to describing a group of people. Next time we could write in the similar way.

“You’re not going to take us?” I didn’t mean it to worm out as a question and was mad at myself for asking instead of stating.

If you say that someone is worming their way to success, or is worming their way into someone else's affection, you disapprove of the way that they are gradually making someone trust them or like them, often in order to deceive them or gain some advantage.

worm out 爬出,钻出,摆脱

A line of hungry kids waited for breakfast, except they weren’t all black. There were older teens in mostly black clothes and Afros posted like soldiers guarding the outside. That hardly seemed necessary when a white-and-black police car circled around the block.

I find this author's way of writing interesting from reading these sentences. The older teens in mostly black clothes and Afros posted like soldiers guarding the outside which makes the police car circling round the block unnecessary.

We posted sentries at the gates.

We wore shorts and sun tops, although Oakland wasn’t as sunny as we’d imagined California would be. I found us a place on line behind Puerto Ricans who didn’t look Puerto Rican but who spoke Spanish. Then I remembered our study of the fifty states. They were probably Mexicans.
