重读 The Old Man and the Sea

Part 1 关于The Old Man and the Sea

The Old Man and the Sea 是一本无需多做介绍的名著。所谓“名著”，就是从小学开始就被列入课外读物的书单的书，是各大书店会摆在明显位置的书。在我中学阶段，试图去读《老人与海》，那时内心很纳闷，如此这般无聊无趣的书怎么会成为世界名著？

美亚上有位读者的评论是这样的

I’ve read the majority of Hemingway’s works, almost all of them when I was in my teen’s and 20’s. I am now in the process of re-reading a number of them, including this finely crafted novella…… now that you can feel some of the old man’s pains, and you are much more conscious how you have to use your knowledge and experience to overcome the declining strength of one’s body. A high school student really cannot truly understand.

我看到这段评论时，想到杨绛先生的几句话：

Part 2 Vocabulary

1. gaunt : very thin, especially because of sicknessor hunger;

The old man was thin and gaunt with deep wrinkles in the back of his neck.

Eg:  Her face was gaunt and grey.

2. club: to beat a person or an animal, usually repeatedly, with a heavy stick or object  棒打，棒击

I can remember the tail slapping and banging and the thwart breaking and the nosie of the clubbing.

Eg: He was clubbed over the head.

slapping, banging, breaking, clubbing 这些拟声词写的 真赞。想到张爱玲对于拟声词的描写也是高手，在《金锁记》里就有大量的拟声词。张爱玲也是翻译过这本书的。

3. haul up: to pull something heavy slowly and with difficulty（用力）拉，拖（重物）

"Santiago," the boy said to him as they climbed the bank from where the skiff was hauled up.

Eg:  She hauled herself up into the tree.

Part 3 sentences

1.

He rolled up his trousers up to make a pillow, putting the newspaper inside them. He rolled himself in the blanket and slept on the other old newpapers that covered the springs of the bed.

这段的描写地道，平时也会卷吧卷吧衣服当做枕头。

The sun rose thinly from the sea and the old man could see the other boats, low on the water and well in toward the shore, spread out across the current. Then the sun was brighter and the glare came on the water.

看到这样的句子，心理只有6个字： 多输入，多积累

Why did they make birds so delicate adn fine as those sea swallows when the ocean can be so cruel? she is kind and very beautiful. But she can be so cruel and it comes so suddenly and such birds that fly, dipping and hunting, with their small sad voices are made too delicately for the sea.

He always thougth of the sea as la mar which is what people call her in Spanish when they love her.... Some of the younger fishermen... spoke of her as el mar which is masculine. They spoke of her as a contestant or a place or an even enemy. But the old man always thought of her as feminine and as something that gave or withheld great favours.

老人把大海当做温柔慈悲的女性，而不是当做竞争对手或是敌人。人与自然并不是对抗的关系。

Part 3 Summary

An old man, Santiago, has caught nothing for 84 days. His little companion, a boy called Manolin is with him during the first forty days. After then, Manolin was forced to fish with others in another boat, nearly catching fish everyday. Manolin loves Santiago, for he was taught how to fish at five by Santiago. He meets Santiago every evening to help him haul up the skiff and carry his mast, harpoo and so on. So thoughful is the boy that he fetches food to Santiago and talks with him about the baseballs news in Santiago's small shack. The next morning, Santiago wakes up the boy in his house. Having had coffee at the spot that serves fishermen, they went to the harbor, where the boy helped the old man ease his skiff into the sea. The old man rowed away again.

Part 4 随感

Every day is a new day. It is better to be lucky. But I would rather be exact. Then when luck comes you are ready.

每一天都是崭新的一天。走运当然是好的,不过我情愿做到分毫不差。这样，运气来的时候,你就有所准备了。

做好准备，才会更有信心。

2. 好久没写笔记了，速度和效率退回到之前的水平。反思这段时间，没读书，没写笔记更多的是自己的懒惰和时间管理不到位，任由自己放飞自我。刚开始，还会心心念，后来就习以为常，再到最后就是忽视，一步一步沦陷呀。好可怕。不需要过多的反思和解释，只需要立马行动。
