Yesterday afternoon, Frank Hawkins was telling me about his experiences as a young man.

ˈjɛstədeɪ ˈɑːftə ˈnuːn, fræŋk ˈhɔːkɪnz wəz ˈtɛlɪŋmi əˈbaʊt ɪz ɪksˈpɪərɪənsɪz əz ə jʌŋ mæn.

Before he retired, Frank was the head of  a very large business company, but as a boy he used too work in a small shop.

bɪˈfɔː hi rɪˈtaɪəd, fræŋk wəz ðə hɛd əv ə ˈvɛri lɑːʤ ˈbɪznɪs ˈkʌmpəni, bət əz ə bɔɪ hi juːzd tuː wɜːk ɪn ə smɔːl ʃɒp.

It was his job to repair bicycles and at that time he used to work fourteen hours a day.

ɪt wəz ɪz ʤɒb tə rɪˈpeə ˈbaɪsɪklz ənd ət ðət taɪm hi juːzd tə wɜːk ˈfɔːˈtiːn ˈaʊəz ə deɪ.

He saved money for years and in 1958, he bought a small work shop of his own.

hi seɪvd ˈmʌni fə jɪəz ənd ɪn 1958, hi bɔːt ə smɔːl wɜːk ʃɒp əv ɪz əʊn.

In his twenties, Frank used to make spare parts for aeroplanes.

ɪn hɪz ˈtwɛntɪz, fræŋk juːzd tə meɪk speə pɑːts fər ˈeərəpleɪnz.

At that time, he had two helpers. In a few years the small work shop had become a large factory which employed seven hundred and twenty eight people.

ət ðət taɪm, hi həd tuː ˈhɛlpəz. ɪn ə fjuː jɪəz ðə smɔːl wɜːk ʃɒp həd bɪˈkʌm ə lɑːʤ ˈfæktəri wɪʧ ɪmˈplɔɪd ˈsɛvn ˈhʌndrəd ənd ˈtwɛnti eɪt ˈpiːpl.

Frank smiled when he remembered his his hard early years and long road to success.

fræŋk smaɪld wɛn hi rɪˈmɛmbəd ɪz ɪz hɑːd ˈɜːli jɪəz ənd lɒŋ rəʊd tə səkˈsɛs.

He was still smiling when the door opened and his wife came in.

hi wəz stɪl ˈsmaɪlɪŋ wɛn ðə dɔːr ˈəʊpənd ənd ɪz waɪf keɪm ɪn.

She wanted him to repair their grandson's bicycle.

ʃi ˈwɒntɪd ɪm tə rɪˈpeə ðeə ˈgrænsʌnz ˈbaɪsɪkl.

certain /ˈsɜ:tn/ pron. 某些          nervous /'nɜːvəs/ adj. 神经的               serve /sɜːv/ vi. 服务

skirt /skɜːt/ n. 裙子                      dirty /'dɜːtɪ/ adj. 肮脏的                       sir /sɜː/ n. 先生

nurse /nɜːs/ n.

worship /ˈwɜ:ʃɪp/ vt.

early /'ɜːlɪ/ adj.
