Today is Sunday.

March 5 is the anniversary day for Lei Feng, whose name is almost known by all the Chinese people, of course the contemporary people. I don't know whether it will be the same ten or twenty years later.

In my childhood, my schoolmates and I always took part in some kinds of commonweal activities as volunteers on March 5. We called that "Learning from Lei Feng, doing good deeds." I think most of the Chinese children did the same things at that time.

Lei Feng died as a transportation soldier of the Chinese People's Liberation Army when he was very young. Before he died, he had always been glad to help other people disregarding himself. He had saved money from his limited salary and helped the poor with the money, although he even hadn't had enough money to buy a pair of new socks. He had been doing everything that he could do to help other people. He had kept writing diaries so after he died, people knew the good deeds which he had been doing. Therefore, he was built up as a good example of cheerfully selfless. The result is the idiom "learning from Lei Feng" means doing good.
