"The Analytical Engine has no pretensions whatever to originate anything. It can do whatever we know how to order it to perform."

"The thinking machine"

In 1833 Lady Byron wrote to a friend, the Brighton physician Dr. William King, recounting how Ada was enjoying the London season and the company of "Scientific people". On June 21 she sent from an account of Charles Babbage's demonstration of a small model of his Difference Engine, describing it as "the thinking machine". She admitted that she had only a very faint idea of how it worked.

Trial portion of Babbage's Difference Engine No 1, 1832

Charles Babbage's earliest conception of his calculations engine was that it would be digital. Working with the engineer Joseph Clement. He experimented with ingenious designs for mechanical components of this complex machine. Early sketches and the first experimental models are designed to ensure that number wheels could only come to rest in one of ten fixed positions. Small mechanical deviations were corrected automatically, while larger ones halted the Engine.
