Mass epidemic: potential dangers in modern society

After finish reading Garrett’s , this book systematically and vividly depicts the occurrence of infectious diseases since the 1950s, as well as the process of human struggle against emerging infectious diseases. This book vividly depicts the performance of different social groups, including scientists, doctors, politicians, religious leaders and policymakers.

pointed out that ecological damage caused by excessive urbanization, high population density, drug abuse and sexual indulgence are the main causes of emerging infectious diseases. In the process of globalization, the massive increase in international trade and travel has increased the speed and spread of infectious diseases. The authors believe that we do not pay enough attention to the real threat of infectious diseases.

Taking China as an example, the SARS in 2002 and the new coronavirus have similarities. They are caused by people eating wild game (the cause of new coronary pneumonia has yet to be verified); neither SARS nor NCV have so far found effective special-effect drugs, people mainly kill the virus by their self-resistance; the transmission is very strong (the new crown virus is stronger).

By viewing several worldwide virus outbreaks, urbanization and industrialization have significantly increased the speed and intensity of virus transmission and also allowed new viruses (HIV, etc.) to spread. How to avoid the next large-scale spread of the virus should be considered by people, whether it is self-prevention or government control.

We can never escape the limits of the ecosystem. Whether we are happy or unhappy, we are in the food chain, eating or being eaten.
