Quartz
China's next box office hit? A dark comedy about smuggling in cancer drugs from India
○ box office 售票处;票房 (the place at a theatre, cinema/movie theater, etc. where the tickets are sold)
○ hit 作为名词,表示“非常受欢迎的人(或事);非常成功的人(或事)”(a thing or person that is very popular or successful)
举个
The Beatles had a string of number-one hits in the 1960s.
○ smuggle 就是“走私;(常指非法)偷运”的意思 (to take things or people to or from a place secretly and often illegally),环球时报(Global Times)则用了“the illicit import”非法进口来替代“smuggle”这一说法。
Chinese ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ focuses on the illicit import of generic anticancer drugs from India to China

It already looks set to be a major hit, having won acclaim when it debuted at the Shanghai Film Festival last month and racked up thousands of raves on Chinese film portal Douban after preview screenings.
Despite the critical acclaim, the novel did not sell well.
○ debut 可以作动词也可以当名词,表示“首演,首次公演,首次亮相”(the occasion when someone performs or presents something to the public for the first time)
○ 还有另一个词 premiere 同样也表示表示“首映,首演”(the first public performance of a play or any other type of entertainment),这里要注意的是这个词去掉末尾的 e 就变成了 premier“首相,总理”在新闻中还是比较常见的;另外,它作为形容词则表示“首位的,首要的”(best or most important)
举个
He's one of the nation's premier scientists.

At a show in Beijing this week, the audience stood for a standing ovation as the credits rolled.
○ standing ovation 表示“(表演或演讲结束时的)起立欢呼,起立鼓掌”(an occasion when the people in an audience stand up to clap at the end of a performance or speech because they liked it very much)
举个
She received a standing ovation at the end of her speech.
○ the credits 指的就是“(电影、电视或广播节目的)演职人员名单”(a list of people who helped to make a film or a television or radio programme, that is shown or announced at the beginning or the end of it)

“Over the years since I became ill, the drugs have cost me my home and bled my family dry. Sir, can you tell me which family doesn't have a patient, and can you guarantee that you'll have a lifetime free of illness?”
○ bleed sb dry: to take a lot of money from someone over a period of time 榨干…
The West is bleeding poorer countries dry through interest payments on their debts.
